Question about speed

I just had Atnt install their gigabit internet connection at my house. I had them put their modem into pass-through mode and connect to my Netgear Orbi. I have a Netgear Orbi rbk20 with 2 satellites.

When I connect a laptop directly to the Orbi with Ethernet and speed test it, I get about 600 down and 800 up.

On wifi I'm getting 500 down and 700 up.

My question being does that sound right or am I missing something here. I understand packet loss on wifi but what I can do to max out the speed coming into the Network?

 

That is about what I would expect. Ethernet is always somewhat faster than a wifi link. ~15% decrease in speed is not bad.

What Wi-Fi card are we talking here?
What is the connection speed reported by Windows? (not the throughput but the speed Windows reports is connected to the router)

Laptop has a Killer Wifi 1525. Signal quality on the laptop shows to be 866.7 mbps

The modem is connected to the orbi by Ethernet.

 

Your download speed seems OK for that kind of connection, your upload speed is unrealistically high.
You can really get more out of 80MHz 802.11ac - you'd have to switch to 160MHz channels (meaning new hardware) or to 802.11ax (same deal here - new hardware).

 

Is there a mesh network available for 802.11ax?

 

It's been announced by Netgear in January and is supposed to be available in second part of the year but I don't see it on their website yet.
@Aivxtla has better inside knowledge of Netgear - he might know something more.

 

Yeah I believe a new Orbi AX model is in testing at the moment:

I know even Arris has been testing a mesh AX model for at least 2 months or so.

I suspect around September or October before either are available. Usually with mesh products I guess they try to have them a bit more stable and feature complete before release unlike bleeding edge routers which are thrown in to the market to get their foot in the door for sales of new technology.

 

I saw that Arris' mesh model is 650 dollars! hopefully Netgear doesnt demand for the first born and money for theirs. In the mean time I really dont have complaints about the speed. I'm just looking to squeeze the max out of the gigabit.

 

Oh I didn’t realize the Arris one is on sale, it’s actually $499.99 for the router and single extension combo or $399.99 for just the router.

I would expect the Orbi to be similarly priced at ~$500.


Honestly if anything, wait at least 6 months - year for firmware to be relatively finalized and by then even the prices will be a bit more competitive, or at the least you may get an occasional sale. I mean the RAX120 for example was a $100 off at least twice on Best Buy within 3 months of sale.

 

I like the idea. I'll wait till the market gets a little saturated and the firmware is better.

 

Those are very good speeds, I wished I had those speeds in my city.
