For my daily home use, should I get the Airport extreme or express? Also, is it better to use apple routers for macbook or would it work the same using d-link or linksys. Also, what do you prefer? the linksys or d-link?

You should be able to use any router with it. I don't know specifically, not owning a mac, but I do own a Linksys WRT54G, and I like it very much ;)

If you like it, you have pre-5 version. At the moment WRT54GL is the good linksys.
As for the main topic- first of all don't buy d-link. Second thing is that MacBook uses Broadcom based hardware so with Linksys or ASUS or say Bufflo - all of them are good routers- you can additionally use SpeedBooster (125Mb/s High Speed Mode)

Basically, using the same type of hardware is more important than using gear from the same manufacturer.
