Got a laptop and looking to upgrade my wireless router; currently DI-624, it does work fine. I'm planning to setup up the router in an aparment complex that shows a lot of signals from other people and it's also not a very good area so I have some security concerns.
Are there routers that would provide better security or signal output? I'm okay with firmware updates (to dd-wrt or equivalent) but want to spend less than $75.
Thanks!

That's a great router. You don't need to do anything. It has great range and security. Make sure you use WPA (or WPA2 if your particular router supports it) with a completely random PSK.
If you want to move to 802.11n, you'll need to spend more than $75, so if you are unwilling to drop at least $100, stick with your current router. -

Make sure your key is 20+ chr long min using all printable chr and you will be fine. Also make sure you use a strong admin pw too.

I hear using a N router kills nearby G signals. It's be poor manners to use N if that's true.

That was true with v1 draft 11.n spec. V2 address that, but the last I heard there was a loop hole for channel bonding, that had not been closed yet. Buying a dual band puts 11n in the 5ghz band away from 11g users. -
yep, thats def true. But going to dual band means spending well over $100 for the gamers d-link, apple, etc.- and it's not even the final draft N- that won't be out until 2009.
we run a dir-655, in g/n mode and it knocks our socks off in n mode at the full 300mbps and the g devices don't suffer at all but we use the d-link adapters also......
