Is there a cheap and easy way to split a wired network connection? To clarify, I mean something closer to a dongle or adapter than a full-sized switch.

why not just get a usb nic and plug the 2nd pc into the 1st by a crossover cable if you dont want a router

Hercules makes a usb wifi dongle but It would cost close to the price of a cheap router and I have no idea where to purchase it in the USA. As epz stated a cat5 cable between the two computers can do the job.

You can get a cheap switch, <$20. Seen some <$10.
Now this will only work if your ISP provider will allow 2 IP's -
I have a router. It simply happens to be on a completely different floor of the house.
And the whole point of this is for quicker file transfer than 802.11n can provide, so USB 2.0 would be rather pointless. -
Get a cat5e/cat6 ethernet cable (or a dedicated crossover cable), plug the two computers together, manually set up the IP info (since there isn't a DHCP server around, obviously), then have one of the two computers host a network-shared folder. Use the shared folder to pass files back and forth.

As it should - if you happen to have a router available, as I believe the OP does not (it's on a different floor).
