My Internet Service Provider wants to update the software in the network router in my apartment and I am really confused and a little concerned as to why. I have never heard of an ISP wanting to update the software of a router before and I am wondering if it is possible that spyware could be uploaded to the router?
This is a wireless router that I purchased from a store a couple of years ago.

Well, if it's your router and not provided by ISP, they have no business touching it, period.
With that said, I don't know what rules apply in your neck of the woods, but what I've stated is basic common sense/ownership issue approach.
Good luck. -

Yeah I understand that but it is possible that they are updating their network and so it is possible that they need to ensure that my router is compatible with their new updated network.
My concern here is not so much about allowing them to do it but is it possible that spyware / data farming could be added when they are doing the software update?
To better understand my situation; I am living in Russia in a supplied apartment and the company I work for has the contract with the ISP, on my behalf. I have asked them to ask the ISP for the reason why my router needs a software upgrade but I was hoping someone here might know whether my fears are unfounded

Is the ISP aware it is your router? My wild guess is they think you have a company supplied router and so will do the software (Firmware ?) update. I agree with Ajkula66. If they insist I would ask what happens if the router becomes unuseable after the update.
There was a Firmware update to Verizon DSL routers here in US a while back (2009) that opened a port on the router [modem/router] Remove the actiontec verizon backdoor on port 456 - Verizon DSL | DSLReports Forums so I do think your fears are legitimateFrozenSolid likes this. -

Thanks Josea.
I think that unless it is absolutely essential I will refrain from letting them 'play' with my router.

If they insist, try to upgrade to the latest firmware provided by the router's manufacturer yourself, and tell them that you already upgraded and do not need their upgrade.

In France Orange updates the firmware in the router and it is all automatic.Internet doesn't work till it's done.

The thing is Orange updates their own devices which I agree is nothing special. If Russian ISP in question wants to update firmware of their own device, they are entitled to do it.
If it is OP's own router, why not simply update firmware to the most recent o a available at manufacturer's website and leave it at that.
