Really annoyed, not only does this lappy not support 5GHZ N , the 2.4GHZ N Band is crippled to 72mb/s!!... uses Broadcom adapter, 72mbps is not N!!!!
Also need to dismantle whole laptop just to get to wifi card...

Actually 72mbps is 802.11n as is everything above 54mbps (with the exception of 108mbps Atheros-style)
72mbps is only achievable with 20MHz channel width. If you set it to 40MHz you get 150mbps.
To even talk about getting anything more out of it I would need to know what router do you use. -
Airport Xtreme N
Connects at 300mbps N with other laptops, Samsung Galaxy Tab even does 5GHZ N,
40MHZ Intolerent is set to ENABLED, can't see any other settings
Also 54-108mbps is known as Super G -
That's a weird setting. Dell's explanation of what it does:
Try to set it to disabled.
What about the settings on a router concerning channel width- it's not set to 20MHz if you can achieve 300mbps so it may be wither 40MHz or AUTO.
If it's the latter set it to 40MHz
That's what I wrote- that everything above 54mbps with the exception of Atheros 108mbps is 802.11n. I mentioned 108 only because there's always someone ready to poke his nose with "no, it's not- 108mbps is also G".
Although technically speaking it's not because it's not in the IEEE 802.11g specs.
