Howdy y'all.
My laptop is unable to access wireless internet through my modem/router; however, if I connect it using an Ethernet cable I am able to connect to the internet. I went to the internet connection options and I have entered the WEP key but the wireless setting is still shown to have "limited to no connectivity" but the "speed" is still shown to be 54 Mbps and the wireless signal to be excellent.
I also have an ESSID but I don't know how to use it.
Specs:
-Windows Vista Home Prenium Service Pack 1
-2 GB of RAM
-2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo
-looks like I have Bluetooth
-I'm sitting next to the modem/router right now with this laptop!
As you guys may know, if I just put down the WEP key in XP, I would be connected in an instant... so I guess I need you guys to steer me through the Windows Vista OS.
I am a noob, so please give me your directions step by step.
Thank y'ee

What router do you have? Also, would you be willing to try using WPA2 instead?
-
and what are your wireless settings on the router?? still default, or did you change anything, or do you know how? can you access the router setup?
-
I would make sure it's not in power saver/balanced mode. That causes problems at times, because sometimes those settings are enabled to turn off the wireless card for "power saving" reasons. I found that even with a full battery (or plugged in) it caused problems.
Hit windows key
Type "Power Options", hit enter
click "change plan settings" under one of the options
Then,
"Change advanced power settings"
And make sure that each mode cannot turn off your wireless card (Select "Maximum Performance" under Wireless Adapter Settings>Power Saving mode for both "On Battery" and "Plugged In")
See if that helps -
atbnet:
-My router is a Verizon GTZ04WG.
-I do not know what WPA2 is.
nobscot6:
-You can't change the wireless settings on this router/modem. It has a plug and play function.
-As I said before, on an older laptop running on Windows XP, I just had to put in the WEP key and I am connected to the internet with 54 Mbps and "excellent" connection.
Meetloaf13:
-The hardware for wireless connectivity has been set on "Maximum Settings" prior to my problems.
I probably need to use my ESSID with that WPA2 thing, but I don't know how to use it. -
You better use WEP for the moment and leave WPA for the next project. Let's get you online first.
Don't tell me what it is, but did you find your SSID and WEP key? -
I believe I have already said that I have my ESSID and WEP #.
-
Ok, is your router set to DHCP?
-
DHCP???
I'm not sure if I can modify the router/modem since it's pretty much a plug and play modem/router sent from Verizon... product type # on the first few posts. -
Connected using Ethernet, enter 192.168.1.1 in the IE/FF url bar, and with your user id and password you can access the router configuration page.

k...look a little closer at your modem/router...Verizon does not make routers...they just supply their customers with the router/modem...i have verizon dsl...my modem/router is a 'Westell 6100'...supplied by Verizon...not made by Verizon...find those details...look for a product I.D. tag on the router/modem...google searching just the model number you posted...the only hit i found on google is this thread...lol
with more details, myself or someone else can help you find and look at the set-up manual and fix your problem
