Hey all, im in the Marine Corps, and being unable to know where i'll be in a year or so, i'm really thinking about getting Verizon Wireless Broadband Internet Anywhere Card for my Alienware.
A few in my squad bay has them, and they seem to play MMOs and such just fine. But what im wondering is the contract system. They say its "unlimited", but i was looking around and it says there is a "5gb upload limit".
What does that mean? Also dont games send info between computers, like a lot of info, so would that count towards the upload limit?
Does anyone have any experience with the Verizon Wireless Broadband Anywhere card?

They will probably charge you extra for more upload data (in a more minutes basis), you need to talk to a verizon customer service to get the accurate plan. What I can tell you is that the wireless card will most likely connect with the EVDO network which has theorically a max of 2.4Mbps for downlink, and 154kbps uplink.
If the upload refers to the downlink, then at 2.4Mbps the 5GB data will be downloaded in about 4.6h. If upload means uplink (154kbps) then 5GB of data will take 72h
Now remember 2.4Mbps/154kbps are just theorically number, most likely you will get half of them, which means multiply the time by 2.
In Canada (Quebec) is like that, Internet is not unlimited, you have a flat fee and a limited amount of data per month, after you reach that number you are charged extra.
I hope I understood your situation, otherwise let me know. -
Wow that sucks. So does that mean that i could only get around 72h or 2x that of airtime?
If thats the case, i'll just wait til i get to my duty station then just get normal broadband. -
I'm almost sure that upload is the downlink or data your downloading into your wireless device, all what I'm saying is that you will probably have unlimited usage if you are surfing, or just communicating with other people using the laptop, but if you are downloading data (video, music or other) then when you overpass the 5GB they will probably charge you either by Bytes or by time, that's why I did the time calculation. The best thing is to call verizon and ask them to clarify the plan.
Are you out of the country now? You cannot call verizon? -
Ok, here below is the plan, l it seems that they will charge $0.50 per extra MB per data downloaded for the month allowance of 5GB, flat rate is $60. They will charge $1 the extra MB for the month allowance of 50MB, flat rate in this case is $40.

All they want is your $. Regardless of my location am getting 150-200kbps speakeasy bandwidth speed test which is a pathetic 15-20kbps transfer rate per second. Lots of problems and no solutions ,I say run as fast as you can Verizon Broadband Service is a joke. -
Are you sure your connection is well setup? Your file dl seems to me to slow for your service plan. Have you told Verizon?

oh yes, tech support calls abound ,maybe 2 or 3 days a month I may have 90-140kbps transfer rate per second. Sevice is even worse at night, most of the time about the same speed as dial up,all of this great service for only $60 a month. -
This is my counsel to you, cancel. Get another ISP urgently.
PS: What type of ISP service is this, anyway? -

In jan 08 I signed up for Verizon broadband unlimited plan(same as the OP's query) using UM150 usb modem,I see now they have a 5gb cap per month.Anyway,I would love nothing more than to get out of this contract,if I cancel they will stick a $175 early termination fee my way
Regarding setup,I ditched the crappo vz access mgr software the device uses, and configured the network connection manually, didn't help much -
What is the plan? DL and UL?

Verizon Nightmare Update
I signed up in Jan 08 for broadband acct which at that time was Unlimited.
Have had problems connecting and even using the service over a dozen times since Jan. After troubleshooting for hours on the phone I finally get one of the techs to admit that its a network problem on their end. Today was the last straw for me,service didn't work again at all ,I call and someone also let it slip that they speed capped my acct as well,I signed up before the 5gig cap was in place... now they are also going to charge me a $150 early term fee as well. In plain english, they totally SUCK and I will never utilize their "services" again. -
Are you talking about EVDO?
-
Yep, this is not the same as Verizon's DSL or FiOS service.
-
I know, I just wanted to make sure, and I also know that their plan is been like that for a while, it is unlimited internet surfing but they have a cap for data DL.
