i've been having problems with a Wi-Fi spot i go to and my laptop with Vista doesn't get the internet from it, it says it connects to it, but that's about it ><
the WAP is a Netgear WG102

It's a public network, and _Vista is designed to be very paranoid about public, or so-called nontrusted, networks. You may have to check the properties of that particular network the next time you're picking up the signal, and see if there's a way to set the level of trust high enough to allow simple web browsing.
-
i've been messing around in the properties, but i'll see if i can't find a way to do that, i was also thinking of talking to the person that works on their computers about it...
thanks for the help ^^ -

Many public WiFi hotspots need to be signed into. Have you tried opening up a browser and entering any URL just to see if it responds with an agreement or signin screen?
There's nothing particularly magical about Vista and wireless. -
I have tried to access websites and i got the same response i get when my connection at home isn't working, also my brother's laptop connects to the network fine, only major difference between the two we can think of is mine has Vista and his has XP

Have you looked through the settings in Control Panel\Internet Options under the Security Tab in the Internet Zone?
As for the WiFi connection ... is the Vista machine trying to use WPA2 on a WPA secured network? -
k, i tried looking in the different security options on it, and messed around with stuff there, set the wireless connection to trusted, and it still isn't working ><
-
I noticed that the IPv6 has limited/no connectivity while the IPv4 seems to be having no problems...
-

Unless you have a very specific reason for needing IPV6, it can be disabled for now.
-
yeah, i disabled it, so i guess it wasn't really the problem because i still can't connect >< i heard from someone that works at the place that their friend has Vista on their laptop and it works with the network, so maybe somethings messed up in my comp, or the network just hates me
well, i'm gonna continue trying random things and the advice i get, thanks for all the input so far ^^
-edit-
i'll also try to get more info on the different settings i have to see if anyone can think of something with those that might help -
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
Without the settings for the network and the settings as set in your PC, there is not much more we can do other than to toss out random thoughts.
-
yeah, sorry, seems whenever i'm on, i don't have enough time to look at my settings, but i'll try to post settings soon, any in particular you'd like me to post? which area it'd be in...
-
the wi-fi adater on my comp is an Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g
my TCP/IPv4 is set to obtain IP address and DNS automatically
the TCP/IPv6 is turned off for now
it's set as a public network
my IPv4 gateway, DNS server, and WINS server is blank
security type is set to No Authentication/open, no encryption type
i have the Norton Firewall up, have turned it off before and still couldn't connect, don't know where to find any other protection stuff if there is any ^^;
any other info you need, or am i just rambling off useless info and not getting what you're looking for ^^; -
Have you tried to setup the wireless network with the wizard?
-
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
-
yeah, it's an open network, and yes, i did run the wizard, any other info you need? ^^
-
i decided to try and connect to my home's wireless connection to see if something went wrong with the wireless in ym laptop, but it had no trouble connecting... this thing is starting to irritate me ^^;

You need to uninstall NORTON, it's probably the source of all your problems. Once you have things working you can re-install if you need/want to. My recommendation is NOT, it causes more problems than it fixes. Disabling it does not work, trust me on this one.

i'm trying to get a hold of the person who works on their network and comps, but so far have been unable to, and i know the gateway and DNS shouldn't be blank ^^
-
just set-up a new wireless network at home, working fine, read something about activating telnet client, would that help any?
-
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
Nope. Your best bet is to find out from the folks whose network it is what the settings are.
-
yeah, no-one here knows what the network settings are tho, and i finally was able to talk to the person that knows who works on their network, now trying to contact them ><
-
everyone's been a lot of help, still trying to figure it out, hope i can help you guys out someday... but i doubt i'd know anything useful, lol

Sounds rather like one of those Grashopper sayings from the old Kung Fu TV show, does it not?
Remember Grasshopper, the wet bird never flies at night -
hehe, for now i've given up on trying things until i can contact the people that work on the network, but atm i don't even know where to find them, was told a general area but can't find them there, lol
-
omg, lol, my laptop is suddenly accepting the connection fully, haven't changed anything XD
thanks for all the help everyone ^^ -
What he may be able to do is make sure in local and wireless network see if the Ip and dns are obtained automatically rather than have a set ip. One reason for this is Say you have comcast modem their ip changes and theirfore your ip is set and will not change with it. Now my problem
. Netgear WGR614 v6 Can Not be "indentified" by my vista it was working untill dell reformated the laptop cause dell is stupid and ruined it while remotely assisting me. At one time i had the Modem into the router and the router wired into the laptop and it was working then tried setting it up and all but Nope. Any idea's pretty sure netgear wont assist me unless i pay them haha not happening.
-
i had IP and DNS set to automatic for most of my tests, seems to me that Vista just likes to be anti-social at times, or could just be my laptop... heh, oh well, hope you get your problem solved also, doubt i can be of any help ^^;
