looking for ideal speed on this as its been very inconsistent on every wide channel/standard channel i try:
![]()
i have set the 5100 properties to the settings that enable the higher speed but if someone can pull up what everything should be set at just to doublecheck that could help. i used to get 135mbps but a lot of the time it's dropping to 18

N-only should theoretically improve speed. Try using a main channel such as one, six, or eleven. You might want to switch back to 20MHz mode as wide channel mode is susceptible to interference and hogs spectrum. Ironically, your speed issues might be caused by someone else's channel bonding router.
With my E1000, 20MHz mode connects at 144Mb/s (actual throughput is 40-50). When 40MHz mode works, link speed is bumped up to 300Mb/s (actual thoughput is 70-80 for 5 glorious minutes before it automatically switches off channel bonding). -
i also skipped the fact that regardless of channel i use i always get a dropdown to about 1-5mbps where i'm frozen for several minutes and usually just go and unplug. is this a common problem for anyone else?

What security mode and setting you using? Use WPA2/AES.
Most draft 802.11n products will knock your throughput down by up to 80% if you use WEP or WPA/TKIP security
Also as above, use InSSIDer to scan for wifi networks near your area. Deviate away from the busiest channels.
