I bought my WRT54G2 about 4 months ago and I've been having problems with it ever since. When I first got the router the first couple of days of usage was great, no disconnection and no problems. I've used the disc to configure my router and everything. But after a couple of days the connection started to drop. The only solution to this is to restart my router by disconnecting the power plug and reconnection.
I've upgraded my router firmware to the latest which is version 1.0.03, change the router's wireless security from WPA2-Personal to Wep, Change the wireless channels to 1-11, Disable my firewall, check my wireless adapter if it's working, install the router again via the cd, RMA trade in my model for another one, and it turns out that it still isn't working.
I've tried everything, I tried connection directly to the modem and it works perfectly. So the problem was isolated to the router and I've tried to upgrade the firmware and re-configure both manually and automatically.
I've done everything that I can possible think of. So how can I solve the problems of my router?

You could try putting DD-WRT firmware on it. This will void your warranty though.

No, I haven't. I wouldn't want to put anything that's not from Linksys into my router.

I had a WRT54G (Original V2.2) had issues ever since i installed the latest linksys firmware. It was saved and greatly improved by DDWRT. Linksys used a mips chip in the G model and the firmware was linux based and so is DDWRT.
DDWRT is an open source linux based firmware for linksys and other routers. Its very good and ads new features that much more expensive routers have but your cheaper router is easily capable of.
However the G2 is not as easy to get DDWRT onto nor does it allow for its full feature set. I personally wouldnt go for it as its not revrsibe on this model at this time. There are some models that DDWRT is great for though just for your reference. -
I'm still trying to fix the problems and I really don't like the support Linksys has given.
Can anyone help me? -
how many other 2.4gz items are running in the house? Any other electronics close to the router?
-
Everything that could disconnect me from my wireless router is turned off, and Im on channel 11 there are also other wireless access points in my area.
-
You mentioned about other wireless access points? How are these access points configured? ( WDS ? ) It appears like this is either a firmware issue or its interference. You may have to start moving certain things around so that the router is an a good open area.

How far away are you from your router, and what signal strength does your computer see coming from your router?
-
Im about 3-5 feet away from my router, the signal strength shows excellent on my computer.
-
What WIFI card do you have? Have you updated its drivers?
Do you have any cordless phones or other devices that use the 2.4ghz spectrum in the house? -
Being 3-4 feet away from the router have you considered running an ethernet cable? Going wired when possible frees up radio bandwidth for the other devices that really need to run wireless. Running wired may also free up some system resources (assuming you'd remove the wireless card).
The more wireless devices you have running in a system, the more csma collisions you'll have with reductions in response time and throughput. -
My notebook wireless card is an Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g Wifi Adapter.
My cordless phone is a Panasonic KX-TG1032S and the frequency is 1.9 GHz.
I'm about ready to throw my linksys router out the window. -
It may be better to try "throwing" the router back at Linksys for a refund or a replacement unit; a lot of what you've been describing points to a bum router.
-
I already trade in my model for another one, and it turns out that it still isn't working.
The only way I'm able to get it to work is by disconnecting the power plug to get everything working again. I just need to do it once and the problem gets fixed. There's no solution to fix this problem at all and I'm so frustrated. I'll just have to wait for linksys to release a new firmware. -
I am having the same problem with frequent dropped connections on my Linksys WRT54G2 router with the "1.0.03 build 001, Mar. 17, 2009" firmware. I have one wireless and one *wired* computer on my desk and they *both* seem to drop at the same time. So I believe the problem is something below the wireless level on the router.
WRT54G2 wireless connection drops/disconnects.
