Actually, not only do I have the right, I have a responsibility to do so, and that makes a big difference. He explained that it's his dad's router, and that he's not happy about losing bandwidth. Do I know how to install custom firmware that allows QoS? Yes. Will I tell him how to do it? No. It's not his equipment, so instead I will tell him to seek permission before making any changes.
Anyone who posts a question in a public forum must expect a variety of answers. In this particular instance, my answer was to ask permission before making changes because I believed it was wrong to make changes without asking. Your answer was how to do it, because you believed it was not wrong to make the changes without asking permission. Because of my posts, he knows that he should talk to his dad and ask permission before making any changes. He was angry, and hopefully my posts helped him see things in a different light. Because of your (and others') posts, he knows how to make changes to the router to help balance out the loads.
That sounds like a fantastic sharing of knowledge to me.
