so my wireless works great...
UNTIL
the phone rings and my wireless shuts down...
its so weird everytime my phone rings my wireless drops and comes right back up when the phone is done...
anyone have any idea how to help fix this?

Check to see what freq the phone is using if 2.4ghz (same as 11g) will cause problems. You will need to switch to a 5ghz phone.

Move the phone further away, or change the channel on the Wifi network.

my router is an n router so i think it should be find but i dont know howto switch it over to the n router setting...
also how do i change the router channel ?
edit.... my phone is in the other room, through a wall... so its not like its right beside it...
also i dont know if it makes a difference but i used to have a phone line in the computer room but its no longer active so i dont think that should make a difference.. -
To change the channel, read the instructions that came with your router.
Regarding the location of the phone - radio frequency (RF) travels through walls. -

11n can and will use 2.4ghz or 5ghz depending on your router and hardware setup. When you go wide band (40mhz for speeds >130mbps) it's harder yet to find a clear channel.

the router came with a cd and no instructions so this is confusing to me...

The CD should contain a manual. If not, visit the manufacturer's website and download one.

I'm thinking the OP needs 1) to set up the router in "N" mode 2) make sure he has a Phone filter between the wall and the modem and if that doesn't work; 3) throw away the phone
....nah jk...get a 6.0Ghz phone if the problem persists after steps 1 and 2.

The document doesn't load for me. However, unless I missed something in physics, the waveforms of IEEE communications easily penetrate most walls. If a signal doesn't penetrate, it is usually because of something contained within the walls and not drywall, sheetrock, or wood. I work within a vaulted area and I can pick up 802.11g signals, so I'm pretty certain that RF can pass through walls. I also own an RF remote control, and I can point it directly at the wall in one room, with doors closed, and the signal will travel through the walls and turn on/off my equipment in the other room.
Since your document doesn't load for me, perhaps you can summarize it? I'm always looking to expand my knowledge. -
RF does go through the walls, otherwise how would you be able to answer your cellphone in the bathroom

this is honestly like japanese to me, i dont know how to set the router to N mode, i dont know what a phone filter is... do i buy them from where?
i really am not making any progress with this...

If you got DSL then you should have gotten filters from the ISP, this filters are connected at each telephone jack to prevent the data network interfere with the landline system, and the landline system with the data network.
If you didn't get the filters from the ISP, then go buy them at radio shack. -
On top of what wirelessman said above. The CD you said that u have that came w/ the router might have the manual/user guide information on it...I suggest going through it to see how to configure the router in N mode. In doing this, this should have the router TX its signal using 5Ghz. Which should be different than the phone.
If the CD doesn't have the manual/user guide...let us know what router make/model you have so we can assist in finding it online from the manufacturers' website. -

Some basics,
DSL is a signal that is imposed on the phone lines. Without the filters when you pick up a phone you will here static on the line. This applies to all phones. This is the reason the filters need to be in place.
11n wireless can operate in 2 freq bands, 2.4 & 5 ghz, not all routers support 5ghz. If your phones operate in the same bandwidth they will interfere with each other. If the router you have can use either 2.4 or 5ghz, most select the 5ghz because of less interference. To gain speeds > 130 mbps the router (and client card) must be set to use what is call wide band. This is where it actually use twice the freq band a std router uses. The 5 mhz bandwidth does not penetrate wall very well at all, so signal strength degrades quickly.
The CD that came with the modem may have a quick setup guide, if new to routers I suggest you run it. All setup needs to be done with a wired connection. You will also find the OP manual on the CD. I suggest you read the setup section.
Some ISP use MAC Filtering so the MAC Address of the PC used to setup the account needs to be cloned into the router. -

ok, the router i have is Linksys WRT160N
i went through the instructions on the cd, and it showed me how to access and change setting on the router, i set it to use N only since my laptop is the only thing using it, and the desktop is plugged right in so it doesnt need wireless... i dont know what i want to do with changing channels or mhz etc etc it was going on about... i dont know just about anything about routers and am scared i will mess it up some how...
phone still disconnects me from wireless after changing to N only... -
So there is an option to change the Hz? If so change it to 5Ghz. Most likely the phone is on the 2.4Ghz band. The channel can be set to 11.

Don't worry about messing it up, it's a normal process in learning.
You can always reset the routers back to factory default and start over.
Is the phone a wireless one? If so there should be a tag some where on the base or phone saying what frq it uses. My guess is 2.4ghz the most common. If this is the case you may need to get a new phone. Normally they do not interfere, they do if the phone is not working with in set parameters.
The 160 does not support the 5ghz.
I would try/check to see if the router is set to narrow band 20hz. And take a not of the channel, if auto force it to ch 11 and try again. If that does not work try ch 1.
