Belkin is the 1st one to come to mind. And Linksys WRT54G & WRT54GS models, v5 up.
-
I say D-LINK.
For numerous reasons that I've already wrote about. -
Linksys WRT54G is very reliable. You probably hear more problems about it because it's the most widely used router.
-
Linksys WRT54G starting from version 5 has crippled hardware and VxWorks instead of linux. It's by no means reliable. What used to be WRT54G/GS is now WRT54GL -
I'm been using a Linksys WRT54G Ver 6 for over a year now. Never had any problems with it. Works Flawless and reliable as you can get for a basic router.
Like I stated: It's more widely used, so you'll hear of more problems.
The only problems I hear of is when people do Firmware Upgrades. But that's with most products now a days. -
I say D-Link.
Had too many problems with the 2 routers I had with them, went back to Netgear...the connection would always drop or the router would restart itself -
Proof of concept

You are talking VxWorks router with 8MB RAM. That just cannot be any good. Besides you don't have firmware problems when you can install 3rd party firmware and that means Linux and more RAM -
That doesn't mean anything for the average consumer.
I don't think the OP has hackability features in mind as stated in the Link.
The Linksys WRT54G is a solid reliable router for home use.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

I have the GL version 6 and it's fine so far...I've only used it's wireless capabilities for a desktop and my xbox 360 but it's solid. I guess I'll put it to the real test when I get my NP5790, ^_^.

So then what brand and model #'s are good? I will call Belkin 1 more time. Apparently level 3 tech. Wow. great. Then I will send it back. I dont know if they issue a full refund or just keep sending me replacements. Anyways
I will do this soon. I need a break from Belkin tech support this weekend. -
i too have a wrt54gl, and its a v5. No problems ever. I didnt know about the gl when i picked it up, but it would have been a better choice had i known. as for routers to stay away from - the only d-link I owned gave me nothing but problems
-
I just cant get that wrt54gl in local stores in los angeles.
How is tech support. I dont wanna do D-Link it is 90 days.
After that i am screwed i guess -
Netgear G routers are notorious for overheating and dying. I have 2 dead ones and my friend has had 3 replacements.
-
I don't think anyone of you guys have WRT54GL v5.
Last time I've checked there was WRT54GL v1 and 1.1.
So either I missed a lot or you should check something.
You're basically recommending a non existing router.
@ LIVEFRMNYC You looked at the hardware, read the article and your smasher is bold letters.
Cool with me...
EDIT: WRT54GL v6 doesn't exist either...
-----------------------
EDIT 2:
As for Netgear, it's really hard to say. There are some people very happy with them and some not. I'm afraid it's model dependent with Netgear as unlike most manufacturers they use very different CPUs for their routers.
There are models based on Realtek, TI AR7, Broadcom, Intel, Atheros and Marvell.
Which one's overhearing? It may be Broadcom (personal experience) but as well it may be Marvell due to 500MHz CPU clock. What model caused so many problems? -
Their not bold letters, their enlarged
I don't care about the technical blogs or criticisms. The Linksys WRT54G just works, and is reliable and stable for the average consumer. Myself and almost everyone I know uses this router for home use.
I however wouldn't recommend if your looking for great range. It's just good for average sized home. -
I had a Netgear router (dont remember the model) WRT54G, after taking it back 3 times to the store, they gave me a WRT54G to replace it, had that for 3-4 years now and it never failed!
However, I dont know about newer models. -
My Belkin Wireless-G works fine..
Been 2 years.
