I've seen numerous posts about intel wireless cards being crappy, whats wrong with them? and is it really worth buying another brand of wireless card? If so whats the best card to get for a laptop?

You just need to update the drivers, some dont work with your hardware, some do. So you have to try out different drivers.
-
True, but other cards are more advanced. The Atheros card for instance supports Super G with a compatible router. This theoretically doubles your throughput to 108 mbps.
-
Not only that, Atheros cards are often more stable and have better firmware - frequently updated.

yes, i have the 2915 pro wireless and its great. but compared to my SMC Atheros card I use for linux, it stinks
-
Thanks guys, seems Atheros is the best way to go then
-
Yeah, my next card for my own computer will be an atheros card for sure. Good Luck by the way

Costly but I'm not regretting the change. Battery life and range, not to mention stability has improved since I switched cards.
The installation was the only hard part
-
so what atheros card is good for laptops?
-
Anyone got any ideas?
-
Well, Atheros is the chipset used for the wireless card, the newest ones being the 5006 chipset.
-
k thanks coriolis

how do you find out who uses Atheros chipsets?
-
Well the Intel 2200 has gotten a bad rap, I dont know why, but I've never had a problem with them. Is it all from user error? or maybe because I've used NetGear routers all my life? They're pretty much fool-proof routers. Although the 2200 is good, I really like the 2915 also. An excellent $5 upgrade from the 2200, but I've never seen any problems with that. Of course, Atheros is great too.

Intel has compatible issues with different things and computers. 2915 is better then the 2200 but atheros is all around better.

So what cards have Atheros chipsets?
Whats wrong with Intel wireless cards?
