So my mom got a new laptop at christmas.... A lenovo with a pentium D inside. Don't know the exact model. It has windows XP on it. Internet was fine until about 3 months ago where it just stopped working with my network. About 2 weeks ago, i went and reset the wireless adapter, turned stuff on and off etc, and it magically worked.
It just stopped working again... this is the wireless, it works on a hard connection.
Drivers are uptodate, i'm right now rolling back to the last drivers to see if that's the problem, i doubt it though. It'll connect to the router, but internet is not coming through.
PLEASE help!!
thanks everyone

Check your DNS settings
-
If it connects to the network but no internet then it sounds like a DNS issue. Either that, or some malware/virus preventing it by blocking ports. Check the wireless card's settings on her laptop an make sure the settings are set to "Obtain IP Automatically....." I've attached prt screens for guidance.
Edit: Another thing to do is open up a command prompt and do a ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter
then ipconfig /release and hit enter
then ipconfig /renew and hit enter
If that doesn't get u online do a ipconfig /all and post the results here. -
Were you using security like WEP or WPA?
-
we changed routers to a dlink (great stuff) and did use wep for a while, went off wep to do some stuff, laptop worked, haven't got back on yet.
-
so i do ipconfig/release then the cmd prompt just sits there doing nothing.... it won't let me type or anything. Now the wireless connection is disabled and it won't re-enable!!

That's what's under the general ipconfig -
Your wireless conection isnt configured to the router at all. Try re-creating a new one.
-
You need to enable DHCP for the wireless connection to begin with. Right now, according to your ipconfig data, DHCP is disabled for your wireless connection.
-
It won't let me enable it!! Everything was fine till i flushed the DNS
-
Try restarting
-
ok, will do
-
Also, you never renewed the IP.
-
Ok, so i restarted my computer.
wireless connectionis now enabled. But now it won't even connect to the router.
Wirelessman, how do i do that? I have it set to automatically obtain the ip address. -
Just type in the DOS console, ipconfig/renew.
-
As Shyster pointed out in post# 9. your DHCP isn't enabled. You might have to enable via Computer Management. Do a start-->run and type services.msc and hit enter. Check to see if the DNS and DHCP Client services are set to "Automatic" and that they are "Started". Also check the Wireless Zero Config. service as well.
-
Done... doesn't look like it's helping it connect though. This is crazy
-
As makeveli and Shyster are saying make sure DHCP is enable. Also zero configuration service should be also on.
-
EVerything is on automatic and on.....
-
Do another ipconfig /all
You should have IP addresses assigned to the Wireless Card...post the results please. -
I've done everything yall have told me to do and this is the result

okay the "Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 2:" looks better now. Why does it say media disconnected idk. But here u can try turning it on and off by pressing the keys/button on the laptop. And making sure it's enabled under Network Connections. If none of that gets it to not show Media Disconnected, I think a restart would be nice here.
Edit: Enable and disable it via Network Connections and re-enable again. -
Ok still nothing....
The media disconnected is still showing, i dunno why!! And it won't let me renew my ip address because of this. Help? -
Uninstall the device from Device Manager and reboot the computer.
-
Then what?
-
the card should be detected at reboot and automatically install the drivers...if not go to back to Device Manager and re-install it and update to the latest drivers.
Edit: Then look for the wireless networks available to connect to. -
It did everything by itself.... and it won't connect to anything it sees
-
Do u see any access points in the Wireless Network List?
What's the status of the Card settings right now? Meaning, do a ipconfig /all and show the results.
Edit: This is beginning to sound like the wireless adapter is disabled in the BIOS...u might want to reboot, go into the BIOS and verify the card is enabled there. To get in the BIOS u usally press F1, F2 or ESC at boot up, before u see the Windows Logo. -
I know how to get into the bios..... let me try that.
-
Ok I take it it's still saying Media Disconnected?
-
I went into the bios, and man, the bios sucks!! It's phoenix bios, and i could find no where to access the adapter settings! Seriously! i do this all the time, nothing, not even fan speeds!
-
So what's the status of the card now? ipconfig /all
-
yep!
you are correct -
Check your Event Logs...

-
You're good now!?!?!?
Okay, did u post that last ipconfig /all from the laptop? And if so who's is the laptop with the name "Laptop"?
This one has the hostname "jason"...what's going on? -
wow, that shows all good. Lets see if i get access....
should i do a ipconfig/renew? -
Yes, do ipconfig/release, then ipconfig/renew.
-
It now says limited or no connection.....
-
It shows all good but for another computer than that which was posted originally? Whose computer has the name "jason", and whose has the name "Laptop"?
-
OMG
i'm such an idiot...
no nothing is working, i by mistake gave you my other computers ipconfig....... my bad, i was so used to working on the broken laptop with a fixed connection, now i went mobile.
So the media is still disconnected, the bios has no options to let me see the adapter, i cannot do an ipconfig/release.
let me get you the ipconfig/all info. the RIGHT info -
yeah i made a really dumb mistake. my bad -
Oh wow...this is what i've been trying to point out for the longest time.
-
*Sigh*...do a start-->Run and type compmgmt.msc and hit enter...check out the Event Logs...mostly at the "Applications" and "System" for errors.
-
sorry man, i'm still waking up, and used to my old setup
ok will do here's the current ip config/all

I found this error, registered yesterday at 9pm, when the internet reset itself. -
Ok go to Network Connections and disable the Local Area Connection for now. And make sure the "Wireless Network Connection 3" is enabled. And go to the section I have attached in the prt screen and ensure that is selected.
