I am looking for a wireless N router but cannot find any decent ones under $70. Please share your experiences with N routers. The range only needs to be 20 ft but it has to be extremely strong at 20 ft through a couple of walls. Also one notebook in my house doesn't have N.
I need a basic router to bridge to my cable modem (30/5).

It will be kinda hard to find a decent new N router for under $70.If your range is your only concern(and not speed) a decent G router can cover 20ft easily(actually it can cover way more than that).I use to have a g router and now I have N.It is faster but I haven't noticed any appreciable gains in range.

ASUS RT-N13
Linksys WRT160N
Also doesnt matter if one of your notebooks is only running G. Routers are normally set to mixed wireless mode by default (B+G+N) -
Err, if one of the notebooks is running G and the rest are running N, the entire network band (2.4) will be limited to G speeds. Easiest way to solve that is get a dualband router but for $70 that's probably not doable right now.

If you set it to "G" mode it's gonna be limited to g speeds but if set to mixed mode- "n" devices are going to work at (slightly reduced) "n" speeds while "g" ones at "g" speeds.

Walmart has all kinds of wireless routers ranging from $50 to $150, depending on what you want/need.
The Netgear N150 is like $50 and has good range.
They also have Linksys, Cisco, and other Netgear models.

A dual band router is a router that can run 2.4ghz and 5ghz frequency bands. This is different to the wireless mode.
Mixed mode allows B, G or N clients to connect without limiting the network. It does knockdown the throughput a little if you connect G and N devices simultaneously but its not a big deal. -
I have a Netgear WNDR 3300 I bought on eBay for $40(manufacture refurbished), and intelled DD-WRT on it, and its pretty fast. I have it setup as: One 2.4GHz G network and a 2.4GHz N network. G net is obviously for my slower laptops and the N for my Macbook.
