I am really poorly versed in playing with networks and connections, so sorry if what I am asking is quite simple. I actually hope it is.
Basically I am getting a new laptop today with wireless N, but my mom's old laptop uses wireless G. The problem with this is that I am buying a wireless N router and I just read in Nickspohn's guide that if she accesses the network it will make it 54 mbps for both of us.
So, my question is, what can I do to make the connection stay at 300 mbps for me and not become slowed down?
I read something about access points or bridging or separating networks - what do I really need to do and how should I do it?
Please help! and thanks in advance =]

When you set up the roughter it has the option (or mine does) to send out g b and n (3 antennas). Plus most N cards can use g b d and a

Get her an N adapter?

Is an N adapter expensive? And how hard is it to install?
-
It'll run you around $70. Installation is a breeze just pop it into your laptop cardbus slot.

Thank you very much. I have just one more question: if I do buy a wireless N card to put into my mom's laptop, does it matter what brand I buy?
That is, if I buy a netgear wireless N card, will it work with a d-link or gigabyte router? Thanks again. -
I like Intel wireless adapter 5300, but all of them should do.

Wireless adapters are brand agnostic so you should be fine with whichever. I'm a big fan of the D-Link xtreme N series.

There is a gigabyte router (that's the brand name I believe) that is onsale right now at my local staples. Its $60 instead of $110. Does anyone know about this brand? My friend tells me its good, but that's just heresay.

I'm not sure if this is true for all routers but my Linksys WRT110 N/G/etc. etc. router has an option for "Mixed, A-Only, B-Only, G-Only, N-Only", mixed being the option you would want to use...you can access a plethora of options by typing in 192.168.1.1 address bar.
The router I am using gives me good speeds regardless, It is only about 60 dollars and can be found at Bestbuy and Circuit City. Linksys WRT110
