I need some help. When I purchased my inspiron back in 02 I had it configured with .b built in. Is it possible to put in a .g wireless card (or the .n) and improve my performance?
-
Yeah its possible. I would reccomend a Intel 2915 Card which as B/G/ and A. Or go with an Atheros card. There is a thread in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum about a group buy and it has a bunch of info on the card. Good luck

it depends on what kind of performance you are trying to get out of it.
while g is technically faster than b, your bottleneck is your cable/dsl connection which is significantly less than b or g speeds. if you're talking about lan xfers, then yes, the g will give you better performance.
so, again, it comes down to what kind of performance you are talking about. -
Yep, Drumfu summed it up for you
Also to note, A technology is on a different frequency then B/G. B/G operates on 2.4GHz while A operates on 5GHz. This means there will be a lot less interferences with things that operate on 2.4GHz also. Cordless phones, TVs, Microwaves, etc. all can interfere with wireless. The list goes on and on -
I've never had trouble with the whole 2.4ghz thing despite having alot of things on that frequency. I have a router capable of a/b/g
As for what I do online: Typical websurfing and lots of downloading-music/movies I play games but haven't in awhile because my system isn't up to playing the latest games.
Will I see an improvement in downloading and surfing? How about distance? -
What kind of situation are you at in your house? Is there a lot of walls? How far will you be from the router?
In all, if your not going to be that far from your router, just keep your router and get the Intel 2915 card since it works well, and it has A compatible and you have a A router. -
As far as I understand it, WiFi-A suffers less from interference, but has shorter range. So it's a tradeoff. Always good to have a device that does both.
Wireless card upgrade?
