I'm buying a MACBOOK PRO and I need a wireless router to go with it.
What I need:
1-It has to have a very stable connection
2- It has to work with torrents
3- It has to have a good range (but not exceptional)
What I don't need:
1-Extreme high speeds for networking (i only need it for the laptop)
2- multiple ports

Avoid the Linux-based ones like the WRT54G.
The Linksys SRX 200 (WRT54GX2) uses MIMO to give a very stable and reliable connection. Works well with torrenting since the firmware is not Linux-based.
They can be had for $80 or so. -

Linksys WRT54GL (linux version). If your going to do a lot of P2P (BT) I would consider moving up to a SMB class router (wired), they can handle the heavy load with out locking up. Then add a AP it more expensive, but will work without any problems.
Load the dd-wrt firmware in the WRT54GL and you will have a stable router. Don't even consider Linksys std routers, under moderate use it will constantly lock up on you. -
Thanks that's good to know. What about the Apple Airport express?

It's a good unit but a little pricey. But they have features that other do not.

Blue you seem to know what you're talking about.
My setup is like this:
ADSL MODEM -> AP -> notebook.
Do I really need a router between the ADSL modem and AP? There won't be any other computers running on this network.
WRT54GL or WRT54GX? -

Mac's are not subject to all of the troubles as PC's. The beauty of a router is that you get a hardware firewall. If you already have a AP you can buy a cheap wired router, and connect the AP through it. Just stay away from Belkin. Here is link on routers performace by Small Net Builder http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_chart/Itemid,189/
This should help you decide. Just look for the cheap routers. There were several $25 wired routers that had the same performance as the big boys. They did a review on about 6-8 wired routers <$30 -
Can I plug an Access point directly into my ADSL modem?

Should be able too, just you lose abit of security and the features a router would offer you.
I dont see a good reason to get a AP instead of a wireless router. -
The only reason is to have to have 100% stability with my torrents. Today I plug my adsl modem directly into my computer and it works perfectly, I just want to keep it that way.
If i plug a router in between I'm scared I'll loose the stability. -

If you require log in credentials NO. If not it will work and/or connect soon as it see the computer connects to it. -

There a few wireless routers that can handle BT load, Dlink, Netgear, Buffalo .... I left Linksys out for a reason, I have yet to install a new models WRT54G or GS this will handle heavy loads. The WRT54GL with ww-wrt firmware will do just find. There is a Buffalo model that will also run the linux firmware.
I would recommend moving up to SMB Wired router. These are design for heavy use, then add a AP. This is what I did. Yes its more expensive but you end up with a lot better hardware. I would recommend a 8 port, you will eventually use the ports up. -

You wont, I run thru 2 routers and still d/l torrents fine.
If anything you want a router between you and a torrent client because thats just broadcasting your computer to the whole world.
