hey guys. sorry for not doing a search here. do i need a cable modem to connect to a wireless router. i'm living in an a college apartment and the internet is shared by everyone and the internet is really slow. theres a ethernet port on the wall, so do i just connect an ethernet cable to the wall and the wireless router then i can get wireless internet? back home i had a cable modem that's connected to the wireless router, so do i need one in order to do this? if i could do this thing, is getting one better or is it going to be the same speed as i had before without the wireless router. btw the isp for the apartment complex is a constituent of brighthouse network running at 10 mps. thanks for any replies

You need to connect it to a modem, or to something running off the modem. The speed won't improve.

Lol how would you connect a modem to an ethernet jack?
Anyway just connect a router directly to the ethernet jack. You will have WiFi. Your speed wont increase since you are still using the same internet connection. -
You can't. Though I've never seen an ethernet jack on a wall before.
The point is that you need a modem somewhere in the connection before the router. Whether the router runs off the modem directly or through a switch doesn't matter. -

Not necessarly, Large networks like university and corporations and home users with FIOS do not use modems. They have a Fiber optic line, no modem just a transever. From there they may go through a server to handle the connections or to a switch. I have FIOS service to my house and have no Modem. -
Exactly. Nearly all universities are like that so that students can access internal sites that is blocked from the outside and makes managing internet much easier than everyone having a different connection. Same with most companies.

You've never been in a hotel room or dorm? An ethernet jack is much, much better than an unsecured, weak wifi connection.

Never thought of it that way. I was thinking "apartment" as a bunch of guys, randomly stringing wires.
