Hello,
If I only want a wireless connection between my laptop and desktop, do I need to buy a wireless router or is a wireless card for my desktop already enough?
Can I connect an access point to my desktop? would that be better?
Thanks
-
You need a router to broadcast the wireless internet, then you need a card in the laptop, and i card in the PC.

My desktop already has internet connection and its on 24/7, I want to know if I just network my Laptop (Intergrated Wireless) and Desktop can this be done with a wireless card in my desktop?
Can I connect a wireless access point to my desktop instead and have connection made between the laptop and desktop?
Thanks -
Unless your laptop is connected to the desktop (i think with that) but you cant get wireless on your laptop with the card in a desktop. You need a wireless card for your lappy. Nick

I think you can make the connection with out a wireless router/AP, but not sure. I think it would involve "internet connection sharing" and an "ad hoc" network. You might try searching for those terms in conjunction with networking.
I use a wireless router/AP -
Yes, both methods are correct.
1. You don't need an Access Point or Router to connect the systems wirelessly. A wireless card in your desktop and one in your notebook will allow the connection to occur (Ad-Hoc mode). Plus, then setup Internet Connection Sharing and you're set.
2. You can also use the wireless router method to connect the systems wirelessly. You just need the wireless router and a wireless card for your notebook.

Thanks, that cleared things up
Does an wireless access point have to be used with a router?
Can I use it with my desktop for connection with my laptop? -
Yes it has to be used with a router. Some have the WAP built in the router. Read one of my guides on the next page, it is called Wireless, securing and all you need to know!

How much is a router these days, like $10.
-
I saw a new linksys for $40. there are not "cheap cheap" but its a good price for what they do.

How does those mini access points for laptop work then? do i have to bring a router everywhere i go if i buy an accesspoint for my laptop?
-
A lot of places have wireless access points, like offices, schools and cafes. All you need to do it to switch on the wireless on your notebook and you can connect to the wireless whereever you are and enjoy the internet! For offices and schools, the wireless network might be password protected, so you will need the technicians to help you with it. For cafes some of them are "paid", and for that you can apprach the staff to help you with it.

Exactly, you cant take your router everywhere you go and get internet. You have to be in a spot were wireless is available, which you connect to wireless through the card on your laptop. People use the router to broadcast the wireless signal. Thats how the places where you can go that have wireless internet have wireless, becuase of there router. Then you use your wireless card and that is how you connect.

Yes, lol I know all that,
I was ust wondering if its possible to broadcast signals with a just an access point without a router

You do need a router i do believe.
