Alright, I'll start with the situation: I have a Bell sympatico wireless DSL modem, and it's range does not extend to the other side of my house.
Equipment around the house:
The Sympatico wireless modem
A crappy 233mhz laptop with a PCMCIA wireless card
A D-link 614+ wireless router (does not support bridging)
My HGL30 laptop with wireless
a D link ethernet router (not wireless)
about 4 computer towers all with 400mhz celerons
Can I use the crappy laptop in tandem with the D link wireless router to extend the range? I was envisioning the laptop would capture the sympatico modem's signal, connect to the D-link wireless router's WAN port...
Would this work? Am I making any sense? Do I wear socks on my hands?

have u tried moving the router to the middle of your house?

I run my own mail server in my house. The mail server computer can only be in the office at the one end of the house, connected to the router via ethernet, not wireless. Haha, that was suggested to me a few times before I posted.

You can do what you want to do, but dont expect to play games that are FP because the lag will kill you.
Set you NB up where you can get the signal.
Then use ICS and bridge the ethernet port to the router.
Good luck -
could I use the PCMCIA wireless, and a USB wireless in the same laptop? take out the router altogether? and would that improve lag in games?

As long as ICS will allow you to select the port, yes.

Try to use Linsys Range extander, you can get it 50-60 buks

My best suggestion would be to get one of the Buffalo routers thats on sale at circuit city for $25 after rebate, flash DD-WRT onto it, and then run it as an access point.

Alright I guess I'll grab a buffalo router then. Just simplier and more reliable (the laptop is a pentium 233, very old, and used when I got it.

Another option, which I use, is the Belkin Range Extender Model F5D7132. It was very easy to set up.
extending range of network with stuff lying around
