Can one or all help me to restore the *local area connection* icon to my laptop.
Presently I have one icon saying "Currently connected to" but the other one is missing and I've not a clue as how to get it or restore it.
I've gone to the taskbar / properties & icons where one can hide etc these icons, but the one under consideration is not there either.
Your help would be appreciated.

yup. vista shows you all your connections in one icon.

very interesting replies, but none get to the problem. I've network connections checked, but still the *local area connection* icon is not on the taskbar. One icon is, the one that gives me power options etc, but not the other.
Anyone else with a solution? -
You mean this network icon is not available ?
-
Sorry Andy for not getting back to this. I thought to be notified by e-mail, and wasn't.
Anyway, that's not the icon --- actually I found out what it is. It's a program called "configfree" put out by Toshiba.
I went to their site and downloaded it, but ran into another problem. It says this when nearly installed, "Error 1923 Service Configfree Service (configfree service) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install sysytem services." End quote
Have you or anyone else any idea as to what that is all about? -
try installing it using Right Click > RunAs Admin option mate
-
Done that vinumsy --- it simply won't work. Appreciate the effort though on your part. Anything else that comes to mind, let it come this way. Thanks!

That error is a windows error that says the file you are trying to install is trying to replace a file that is currently in use.
Even though the icon is gone, I suspect the program is still there. Did you go to Programs and Features in Control Panel and remove the earlier version before trying to install the currently downloaded one?
I bet the service is still running. Perhaps going to services and stopping the service -
gerryf19 --- do you mind taking a stand please while you get a standing ovation!!!
Obviously you were right. Here's what I did --- I went to Control Panel as you instructed and found the program quite active & happy, running without the icon on the taskbar.
But, when I went to close it down, it appeared to be installing and at the end, I got another error message. Being in a rush at dinner time, I rebooted the machine as it gave me option. When it came back up, there the little critter was --- right on the taskbar where it should be.
Any idea as to why instead of closing it down (at least seemingly) it didn't. Will appreciate your furthered thoughts. Thanks again!!! -
Here's what I did further --- I went to the Control Panel, then to Programs & Features --- double clicked on the Toshiba Configfree, and it installed again, though correctly and no error messages this time around.
Therefore, I would conclude the ending of this exciting & thrilling saga, known by "As the Configfree turns" --- stay tuned to a computer near you for more acid indigestion causing episodes in the near future!!! -
Hi,
Yes this icon is not available in my system tray. I have done windows update service pack2 since then Network icon is missing from system tray. please help! -
Ayesha, did you try following the instructions given in this thread by gerryf19? I never heard back from him after my suggestion to stand up and take a standing ovation for that last great feat, unless he's still standing. Gerryf19, you may sit down now and answer my question from last November if you're so inclined. :-}

Right click start orb>properties>notification area> check network
-
Cat Mom --- what is ORB .... what does one do when one arrives in the notification area?
-
In vista, it is the little round ball with the windows key mark on it that is located in the lower left corner of the screen. It's the same one you click to bring up the start menu. In this case right click in stead of the usual left click.
then left click on properties
then go to the notification area tab on the top of that window and left click on it
then put a check mark in the little box next to network by left clicking the box if it is empty.
then click OK -
Well, I'll be dog gone, OH, pardon me, I mean "cat gone" .... your participation on this thread is very helpful and appreciated. Thank you!!!

You are welcome. It would help if I could get the left and right, right.
