lets start this thing for those of us that have this card and can not use it to its full abilities.
lets get info compatable routers that will actually run at the stated 300mb speed and not cripple the internet at half speeds...
best drivers....
things like that. i can start off with the buffalo whr-hp-54g and linksys wrt54gl WILL NOT allow full internet speeds but will do 54gb over network transfers. i have 20mb net connection and i can only get 10mb. ive spoke with intel and they said the router has to have channel bonding or this will be the outcome..
i know i for one will be switching this out for a atheros card in order to achieve the full 20mb down i pay for not 10mb.. so we need to see which routers will actually work fully with this card
-
I have one ordered and should be receiving it soon. The bottom line is that yes, needs to be able to do channel bonding, and this must be done on a dual band (read: must have A) router. I will be out of luck for the full 300 Mbps connection because I have a DIR-655, but I only paid $30 for it so I'm OK with 130 or 140 Mbps or whatever. I only have one other PC with Gigabit ethernet, rest are 10/100.
My guess on compatible routers for full Draft-N connection speeds (Dual Band Draft-N 2.4GHz/5GHz):
Buffalo Wireless N Nfiniti Dual Band
D-Link DGL-4500
D-Link DIR-855 (1Q 2008?)
Apple Airport Extreme
Linksys WRT-600N
About your 10Mbps throughput, I don't know if I would blame it on the card. The 4965AGN is fully 802.11G compliant, and based on this review http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/reviews/article.php/3572701 your router can provide as much as 29Mbps at 50 feet. The dual-channel and bonding requirement is only applicable to running in Draft-N, so this can't be to blame. I think that whoever you spoke to at "Intel" is feeding you a line.
There tons of things that can affect your speed. The test in the review above wasn't done downloading from the internet...meaning your router is likely to blame for poor performance to your internet connection. If you did some tests running between PCs on your local network you might see higher throughput results. I noticed a huge improvement (from about 5.5Mbps to 7.9Mbps) by upgrading my Netgear WR814 to a D-Link DIR-655 on the same speedtests at DSLreports.com. I haven't done any tests between PCs on the local LAN. -
all my other laptops can get the full 20mb so its not the router they are all using atheros based cards
-
i had someone suggest to disconnect one of the three antennas on the 4965 and i would see the full 20mb speeds. why would this work imo i would not think it would.
-
Sorry, I don't know why you are having issues. To see the benefit, buy a Draft-N router, preferably a dual mode one! Another other option is to buy a different wireless card.
Your router and your "other laptops" wireless cards both use the Atheros chipset. Routers and wireless cards with the same chipsets play nice together.
What you can expect with the 4965AGN. This shows comparison of baseline 802.11G, A, and N, then compares Apple wireless chipset vs the 4965AGN in 20 and 40 MHz configs. Note the baseline A and G numbers they use.

actually my routers use the broadcom chipsets not atheros
-
zfactor, I saw a Netgear Next N router at Best Buy the other day with the "Connect with Intel Centrino" label on the front of the box. I don't believe it's dual band, and couldn't see on the box where they mentioned N compatibility with anything other than their own adapters. I thought that label is what we with 4965agn cards were looking for? If not, then why that label?
-
Okay, after much research it seems that no one to this date has gotten their Intel 4965 set to 40MHz channel width. The only options are "20MHz" and "Auto" which from first hand experiences and other people's experiences have had the same thing, it only maxes out at 130/144mbps.
I myself am getting 144mbps and bein a person that is never satisfied until i get the best, it bugs me. I am just wondering,
HAS ANYONE EVER SET IT TO 40MHZ ON THEIR 4965 OR GOTTEN MORE THAN 144MBPS????
if so, pleeeeasseee share it with me because I do not feel like forking over more cash for a better card when I already have one. That is unless microsoft might be able to refund me. -
I just received my TRENDnet TEW-631 BPS N router. I only had time to do a quick install yesterday and was getting 144mbs. can I tweak this router to get the full 300 mbs of wireless N ???
-
Hi,
I've the same problem with my 4965AGN and the D-link DIR635 wireless-N router, I can't get more than 144mbps.
I updated the 4965AGN drivers to version 11.5 but there is no change.
If someone have a solution..
thank you -
Did your D-link router have a "Connect with Intel Centrino" label on the box? Curious. I believe you need to connect a 5ghz to use N capabilities...see this thread for more info: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=191972 -
Still new at this WiFi stuff. -
You do not need to connect at 5GHz to use 802.11n. On the 2.4GHz band you'll connect at max 144Mbps (single-channel mode) with an Intel 4965AGN; on the 5GHz band you'll connect at max 300Mbps (dual-channel mode). Both are 802.11n, and both are at least several times as fast as an 802.11g connection. Other wireless cards (Atheros or Broadcom-based, e.g.) can connect at 300Mbps on either band.
-
I saw a few months ago on the D-link website that they were going to release new drivers for all their wireless-N products, but I'm always waiting for them... -
Wow that blows - so it's intel 4965 chipset that's preventing connections greater than 130/144? Just picked up new Trendnet - more or less DIR655 and sure enough 130 is the most it will go. Not to mention, it will often drop down to about 1/2 that (50s) after awhile. What am I doing wrong?
-
How far are you from the router?
-
-
-
I saw a thread on how to install 4965AGN card...can anyone point me to it? I need to know what antennaes to hook up. Thanks.
-
Balck in right (terminal 1), white in left (terminal 2) and gray in the midle (terminal 3).

Wireless...blah! I posted this in the vaio section but u know i think this maybe a better place to ask it...
This is just a copy and paste of what i wrote in the vaio section. So far this thread has been very educational, but I'm still not finding what i need.
I need some help from you guys. I've been on the phone with with Vaio and D-Link Support for more than I'd ever want. I'm thinking some people on this forum are probably using the same setup as I am.
I cannot get a connection beyond 54mbps with my N router when I connect my Vaio to it. My Vaio as the Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection (802.11a/b/g/n). Have any of you been able to?
Firmware/drivers for router and adapter are updated. Both supports say that my router is set to broadcast and adapter is set to receive. I've fiddled with a ton of settings and none work.
I just hung up with Vaio tier 2 support, and they basically said that the drivers currently offer do not unlock all the capabilities of the card to be more compatible with the newer routers and so its a hit or miss in terms of being able to get N speed or not...haha god I love software/hardware development.
But if anyone has this router and card combo and can get over 54mbps, I'd REALLY appreciate it if you would share with me your connection settings!
Much appreciated and I hope everyone has a great 3 day weekend (although i must work...haha). -
One stupid question on the acount of the monkey, what router do you have?
-
oh god stupid me...on my thread it was part of the title but its a D-link DIR 615 rev. B
-
Which firmware version do you have? is it v2.21?
-
i have 2.24 - most recent, and i noticed i cannot go back to an older version.
it shipped with 2.20
my intel is newest release 11.5.1.15
which i manually downloaded because sony only offered the original driver which is like 3 versions old. -

-
hurray =)
in case i didnt mention before, my vaio will only connect to the router when the router is set to broadcast any signal, including mixed signals, but will NOT connect when router is set to N only. My vaio still "sees" the network but fails to connect. -
Hi, I'm back, yes, the router must be set for mixed, because depending on the environment the router will go back to G throughputs, especially when your are far from the router.
Who else is using the wifi channel? -
i'm the only computer using it.
i have a desktop hard wired to it. -
Yiu must leave the mixe feature on. How close is your laptop from the router and what speed are you getting now?
-
actually, only true if quite a ways (>20meters) or if you also have a G wirelesss client....(mine is set to mixed due to a G wifi printer)
try just N
make sure your channel width is set to auto 20/40
here are some screeners of my settings from another thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=247375&page=2
also, I downloaded and looked at your DIR- 615 manual, it's about the same as my 655. I get 130mbps w that card on my dell.
On my HP w/ a dwa-643 express card we get 300mbps, same on any lappie we can plug them into when doing repairs. -
On LOS, but not if you are in a second floor or basement, or on the roof, or in the bathroom, or in the yard, or in the garage, or.................................. -
i was almost always a few ft away and also have a high gain antenna so thats not an issue.
anyways fixed for now. hehe. thanks for the help! -
what router do you have?? -
I forgot to mention that, and the reset puts it back to the factory defaults, like the settings I suggested and also shown in my sreenshots. -
playing around with the settings one by one apparently Extra wireless Protection MUST be enabled for computers to use it on N.
-
okay intel 4965 thread.
