Hi,
Ive just recently purchased a lap top with a wifi card, i set my broadband internet up then set up my wi fi router, it all works perfectly apart from outlook, when i set the email up first time it works but when i go to log back onto outlook after shutting it down it wont connect, it says my isp doesnt recognise my username or password, ive tried both outlook and outlook express, anyone have any ideas whats wrong or where im going wrong?

It has nothing to do with your wifi. Check to see if you have the right out going mail server address. It should be on your isp's site. I had the problem once and that solved it. You should use Thunder instead of Outlook. It has less security problems. While your at it, download the Firefox browser. It is better than IE.

Did you set up security on your wifi? -
my wifi works perfectly, i'm not to sure whats going on, all the details in the outlook setup are filled in correctly, when i first set up my internet connection through ethernet windows set up a local area connection in the outlook account setup it says that it is still using this local area connection to connect to my mail server, could this be the problem? as i dont use this LAN to connect to the internet anymore, i use the wifi connection.

Can you download your email? Are you using this computer online right now? If can download your email then it more than likely is the settings in outlook. Either you typed the wrong username and password or you have the wrong address for the server. Post the link to your isp and what settings you are using.

Here is the help guide from your isp: http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/email/outlook_settings.html
Are you running a firewall? -
i'll try and be clearer with whats going on.
I set up my email account, it worked fine, downloaded messages and sent 1 message which i sent to my web based email account as a tester, it worked. i shut down outlookexpress
reloaded outlookexpress, it opens fine, whilst connecting to the server it asks me for my username and password???? so i retype it just to make sure i'm getting it right. it asks me again, after a while i get an error message saying that my isp doesnt accept my username or password.
i go to settings for mail and run the test, i get all ticks apart from the download bit.
could it be the security settings on my wifi network? -
I am alomst sure that it is your settings. But, it could be a firewall.
Who is your mail provider?
Check you SMTP outgoing mail settings.
-
my isp is tiscali
my settings are
pop.tiscali.co.uk
smtp.tiscali.co.uk
obviously i know what my user name or password is, do you think that my firewall is not letting outlook connect? i'll check my settings when i get home (im at work now) i may not have outlook on my list of programs that can connect without asking. -
thanks to both of you for your help,
i'll check my setting against those from my server, cheers bugmenot
i'll also look over my firewall settings, i'm running windows firewall and zonealarm and i think there may be one on avg antivirus? i know there is one on my modem and my wifi router, i'll take your advice heart of gold.
if i'm back on the board at this time tomorrow you'll know it didnt work.
thanks again [

The best source of info for anything concerning Windows or other Microsoft products is the Microsoft Knowledge Base. It's the best tool for troubleshooting and is used by every tech. It's usually the first place they search.
Select your product (in your case Outlook) then enter key words.
href=http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1
remove the "href=" and paste the rest into your browser
btw, be sure to specify which version (Outlook 2002, Outlook Express, etc) you need help with cause it's a HUGE database. The more specifc you can make your search the fewer/better results you'll get.
Hope this helps.

Sorted.
Turned off all firewalls, incoming/outgoing virus checking, went to isp website changed passwords, put new passwords in outlook (i binned outlook express, i messed with it that much through frustration that i couldnt remember the original settings)
and hey presto my email now works. i now have my email virus scanner and firewalls back up with no problems. -
Well, he did not come back and let us know if he got it working. He must have got it working or could not find the thread because it got moved. It is always nice to put the answer to the problem at the end of the thread. That way when somebody googles this problem they can find the answer to their problem.

i cant believe you wrote that comment underneath my post saying i had fixed my problem and how.
