I have no idea what router you are using because you typed it wrong or something, but yes it sounds right.

sorry f5d8236-4 wireless n
-
Well your wireless is running at g speeds. Do you have a g card in your laptop, or do you have other g devices connected?
-
i have a intel wi fi 5100 agn and my hp hdx 18 laptop. the desktop is an old gateway running windows 98 not sure if this matters.

Ethernet (hardwired CAT-5E cable Router to system connection to Ethernet port) speeds are faster than Wireless G (802.11G) which max speed is 54mbps. N is 200mbps +. Your network speed is determined by the slowest device, in your case your Wireless G adapter. -
so my desktop is slowing down the laptop. with the intel 5100 agn do i need a wireless n card
-
Is the desktop wireless? If not, and your laptop is the only wireless thing, then you have something configured wrong. (If you dont do a lot of network sharing between your two computers i wouldnt even worry about it). N does not make your internet faster.

His desktop is wired, so he should be getting Wireless N speeds.
Because everything remains "draft" n wireless connections between devices from different standards remains dodgy still. It's frustrating as heck, but you almost never get full speed in these situations.
I have an intel 5300 wireless n adapter and the best I can get from a very basic dlink dir-615 is 100mbps wireless--and that is only after disabling encryption. I've tried them all wep, wpa and wpa2 and I cannot even connect with them enabled (I've read that wep and wpa will prevent wireless n speeds and you must use wpa2, but there is no real reason for that to be that I can surmise) -
Hmm just switch everything over to N and be happy? ;P
-
it's not an a wireless G v N issue in his case.
I want to add to my above post--WPA (a or 2)-AES works fine, it is just WPA-tkip that does not work -
well, this seems to be identical to my situation in which i have a LINKSYS rangeplus WRT110 router (that is capaple of N-draft, 150mbps). It's configured in mixed mode and i have 2 wireless N-draft PCs connected to it at the speed of 150mbps while my T61 (which has intel AGN wireless card) can only connect at 54mbps max, G. So far, i can never get my T61 laptop to connect through N-draft mode, but it's fast so i don't seem to care.
you might try to adjust the wireless adapter settings in you laptop.
wish u all the luck. -
I have adjusted the adapter to no end and it doesn't make any difference. I actually blame the router more than I do the wireless adapter.
It's a Dlink 615 draft wireless N router that cost a grand total of $39; hardly cutting edge stuff. I bought it because it cost the same as the wireless G router next to it and I needed a cheap router to carry around in my laptop back after breaking my other one.
Truthfully, I never really expected to get 300mbps--heck, I never expected to get 200 mbps. I was just hoping to get more than 56mbps. Now that I am getting 100mbps, I'm thrilled. -
this is a lil bit off topic but are trendnet wireless routers any good? i've seen a lot of positive reviews about them.
-
Never used a trendnet wireless N router. The wireless G one I've used was fine. No problems. About the only issue would be that the casing was rather cheaply made--innards were fine
question about wireless speed
