Not sure why, but when I am downloading through Utorrent, my download speed will reach its max download speed at 300 kb/sec, but then after like 30 seconds, it will go back down to 0 kb/sec and then repeat the cycle again. I have not tried wired with my laptop yet, but on my desktop it is downloading fine and is having constant speed via wire. I am running a 2WIRE 1701HG gateway. I tried forwarding my ports, but the same thing is happening. Anyway to fix this is appreciated.

Have you set up port forwarding? Your router's firewall will block various torrent ports unless you specify exceptions.

I think it has to do with the distance from your wireless router. But I really am not sure.
-
My laptop is in the same room as my router and I have tried port forwarding. It is like my internet gets disconnected as soon as I reach my max speed.
Forgot to mention that direct download is perfectly fine. Not sure why I cannot use torrent. -

If the modem isn't the issue, try reducing the number of downloads/uploads. -
Who is your ISP? They may be ****ing up P2P on purpose
-
May be it has to do with buffering, may be somehow the laptop cannot put up with the server transfer rate.
-
My ISP is AT&T and I do not think it is my router or gateway (1701HG). My desktop is downloading torrents perfectly, although it is connected through a wire. I will try to connect it through wire and check if that will help. If the wire will fix the problem, is it the issue with the wireless card or my gateway?

How old is the laptop, what brand/model is it, and what wireless NIC does it have? Also, what OS are you running, both on the laptop and the desktop?
If the desktop is not having any problems, then, as you surmise, the problem must be with the wireless end of things. Without knowing the info on the laptop, I have no idea whether the fault is more likely to be with the laptop's NIC or the gateway you're using; however, I would point out that, unless you made a typo in your first post, and you really have a 2701HG and not a 1701HG, then you're running with a gateway that may no longer be properly supported (notwithstanding that AT&T, and not 2Wire, is supposed to be providing support).
I would suggest, as a first step, that you contact your local AT&T provider to see about getting your gateway upgraded - probably a good idea in any event - and then see where that leaves you. -
I am running a M1530 with the Intel wireless card and running Vista. I am using the 1701HG gateway. That was the gateway that AT&T sent me. And when you said that that gateway does not support AT&T, do you mean that it will have compatibility issues with my connection? When I download stuff on my desktop via wire on my desktop, everything works flawlessly. My desktop is running XP. I am not sure what is up with my laptop.

I don't know too much about the 2WIRE 1701HG modem/router combo so I can't comment specific to it. But on some wireless router, if the transfer rate is at the peak of the established bandwidth the router will drop the wireless link. Some router will do it for the sake of security, it thinks it's an attack. Some will do it because the ping messages take too long to get back due to your torrent packets flooding the channel.
Given your router/modem combo is from an ISP. I'm guessing it's a security feature. -
Seeds?
Unstalbe wifi connection?
Too many downloads as some said?
You have alot of variants that could affect torrent downloading. -
Seeds isn't the issue right now. My max download speed is at 300 kb/sec and as long as I reach there, not enough seeders is not an issue. My wifi connection is pretty much stable. I have never gotten disconnected before or the connection is running extremely slow for no apparently reasons. And also I have tried only downloading only one file.
Anyway does anyone have any issues with the 2wire gateway that AT&T are giving out? Is there some way to disable that security feature? I will be going to college in the Fall and will be getting AT&T broadband again and I would not like this to happen while I am downloading. -
Nope, I said that support for the unit is supposed to be given to the end-user by AT&T; I did not say that the unit wouldn't support AT&T.
-
Just get the latest drivers for your laptop so it can properly interface with your network.
-
Sometimes my antivirus also does this..its quite weird. Also there was an XP patch to enable more incoming connections or something..im trying to find it
-
How much memory do you have on your laptop amigo?
-
I have 4 gig of memory. Anyway I'll try to upgrade my gateway and see if thats the problem. The gateway is pretty old. =/
-
I agree, the best is and upgrade.
