I have almost no idea what's going on when it comes to networking and internet connections, but I'm trying to learn. I've also searched for info in past threads, but could not find an exact answer to my question. Since I've been playing online with GTAIV quite a bit and cannot stand to disconnect my laptop from the internet, I decided to share my 3 mbps connection between my 360 and 9262 via a d-link gigabit internet switch. I'm not sure how much bandwidth is used by xbox live, but I know that utorrent is using most of what is available. I've also been noticing a lot more lag on GTA since installing the switch ( cars and such appearing out of nowhere, as well as wacked physics with opponents cars ), obviously because of utorrent. At the same time I could say that there is no way that my download/upload speeds are taking up the whole pipeline. Bottom line : I know I need to adjust how much bandwidth is allocated for each connection, but I'm not sure how, or how much, each line should be allowed.

you can easily set utorrent to utilize less bandwidth

There is also a catch. If it is not a public distro like Linux, your download will depend on the upload. For instance, I have a 24 Mbit connection at home. Back in the day when I was using torrents, I would limit my upload to 10-12 KB/s and I would get 70-100 KB/s download. At night when I went to bed, I doubled that upload restriction and I got twice the download I had with the initial upload. -
Not only bandwidth limit the program, but limit the number of peers able to connect.

I guess what I really need to know is how much bandwidth to leave for gtaIV
-
1mbit should be quite enough for it

That's an interesting fact you mentioned. I used utorrent for a short while before switching for azureus and didn't notice it. However, in azureus i keep upload capped at 20kb and it does not affect my download speed. -
The games do not require high bandwidth, rather they require low pings.
The best way is to not download when you want to game. Besides, how much do you need to torrent? There are only so many linux .iso's

Half the reason I bought the switch was to keep utorrent going all the time, and my seed/leech ratios up. It looks like I'm going to have to get a better connection.

sainalfonzo, go to www.speedtest.net and get exact results for your speed. Pay attention to Upload results, that is more important than download in your case, because thats what your in-game ping depends on. Try to cap utorrent uploads so that you'll have about 200-300kbps left for the console. This should make it up for comfy gaming. Upgrading your internet connection is a bright idea too)
utorrent vs gta IV
