Apparently newegg had a batch of fake "CPUs" for sale... (well just look at the pics, you'll see what I mean)

    http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=636484

It does seem they pulled it off the web and are sending out real CPUs for eh... those things. However, it could very well be that the other merchants have gotten some of those too and are selling them even without knowing. :(

Sorry if this belongs to other forum, I just thought not many people would read it there... and since there was recently a story with Kingston USBs, just be careful who are you buying from. I can easily see people trying to ebay-scam with those as well.

No need for a warning, the issue is already resolved.

Well if this means resolved, then I guess it is. :D

" Intel has been made aware of the potential for counterfeit i7 920 packages in the marketplace and is working to [find out] how many and/or where they are being sold. The examples we have seen are not Intel products but are counterfeits. Buyers should contact their place of purchase for a replacement and/or should contact their local law enforcement agency if the place of purchase refuses to help.

Intel is getting samples to inspect and until then we can say that everything in the package appears fake. Some of the photos of the processor look like it is a casting and not even a real processor of any kind. Newegg has moved quickly to replace the suspect units."

P.S. And yes, there are *still* Kingston "128GB" USB flash drives for $50 on ebay.

I think Newegg needs to stick with purchasing from known good suppliers and not from some street corner.
There are distribution channels in place and this is what happens when you
try to cut corners in the name of more profits.

    edit:
Of course i am assuming that newegg was the one here cutting corners and not a known supplier.

Whoever stole those processors and replaced them with the fakes obviously went to alot of trouble. Usually it is persons on the inside somewhere in the distribution chain that end up being able to pull off a scam like this.

Probably not a good idea to try something like this with a company with the resources Intel has. I'm guessing Intel will come down on these individuals like a ton of bricks and they will probably catch them fairly quickly if they haven't already.

The cpu's were not stolen, the packaging was not even original.
Fake from the get-go, someone found a sucker to buy 100% bogus product.

My assumption is that someone on the inside replaced 300 real CPU's with 300 fakes thereby profiting from a theft. The fake CPU's had to be introduced into the distribution chain somewhere. security is pretty tight at these warehouses, cameras are everywhere and there are many security protocols that are in place.

These i7-920's only cost $289 and multiplied by 300 only ='s $86,700 -- not worth the risk of getting caught imo. A scam like this against big companies like Newegg and especially Intel will net some serious jail time for somebody.

The guy who documented opening the package was hilarious. I wonder if they all had to be sent back to newegg ;) probably.. I'd love one as a souvenir :D

Yeah he was (surprisingly) not really worried obviously, he knew he'll get the replacement. In any case if i7-920 shows up on E-bay, it's probably fake. :D

I'm surprised NewEgg doesn't have a direct contract with Intel to get the chips, to be honest. Seems weird they'd be going with a third party supplier, when they could order directly from the source, given the number they sell.
