3 cell battery, that thing's gotta get all of 2 hours on battery with that IPS touchscreen?

2 hours at load, yeah. Guess they had to cut costs somewhere.

Although I'm a little impressed it gets 3 hours surfing.

Great find! I just purchased one. I have a rMBP 13, but honestly, it's overkill. It obviously isn't perfect, but it hits the right spots for me.

Yeah under load its closer to 3 hours, but how I've been using it sometimes I see 5 or 4 hours battery life according to Windows. I know that's not very accurate but I'm still quite happy with it overall. If battery life was such a big issue right now, i'd consider adding the extended-life battery via the secondary battery connector. However, Acer, nor a 3rd party vendor, has started selling these add on batteries yet. It'd be a shame to waste that connector of course.

Some things I've noticed about this laptop:

-its thin, light, and well thought-out; the features one gets are pretty good for the cost (which should go down in the coming months)

-display quality is above average, touch capable and the hinges are strong enough for heavy fingers

-backlit keyboard is bright wit only ON/OFF and has a blue and white color scheme, looks pleasing

-the touchpad reminds me of Apple Macintosh laptops (gestures, two-finger right click, etc.), but its far from the same quality, it has a bit of play in it which makes a slight tap, may be an issue, overall a useable good touchpad

    -mini displayport with usb 3.0

-relatively quite, runs cool even when pushing all four cores and igpu at once, being an 8W-15W TDP SoC/APU it performs very good, Turbo holds 1.4 GHz with latest 13.8 Beta video and 13.4 chipset drivers with AC Adapter

-touchscreen comes in handy sometimes, seems lazy but it adds to the overall user experience and its optional so why not, it has a very responsive and accurate digitizer capable of 10-inputs

-i haven't tested games except a little bit of minecraft, and it looked great on this dispaly

Conclusion: Its certainly not the best but its darn good for the price and form factor.

    Other alternatives:
-HP 11z A6-1450, no backlit kb, 7 hr battery life, cost a bit more
    -11.6" Intel VivoBooks

If I could get one for $380 I probably would. But it's $440 now. Under $400 seems about right. That's awesome that it has a spare battery connector though. But this doesn't support dual channel vRAM either does it? I guess you really wouldn't expect to play any games on this little guy. But older titles should play great.

Acer Aspire V5-122P – System Idle Power and Temash Tablet Thoughts
Posted on 13 May 2013 by Chippy

If you keep your eyes peeled you could probably find one under $400 soon. You're right, gaming on this laptop will require lowered details and resolution settings as well as older games mostly. I don't think it would play modern games all that well.

Don't forget that this model does not have the backlit keyboard, you will pay state taxes, and is initially more expensive compared to the V5-122P-0600 Amazon model. Its still not too bad for $400, I almost bought it from BB. However I'm glad I looked a little more right before committing. One would have to keep an eye for the best price.

Yup, and the cpu is rather weak which shows at times. Sometimes you're left wondering why its taking so long to load webpages ('power save' mode). My 6475b didn't seem to exhibit this..

The heatsink is more of a heatplate made of copper too. It does not have fins of any kind but the fan is moving the hot air out.

Why did Acer not put Kabini APU in these rather then Temash and equip it with a more capable cooling system?

Money is not an issue. I wouldn't mind paying more for a higher performing APU. Kabini would likely be $25-$50 more at most, plus cooling. I'll see how it behaves with an SSD.

For those looking, the 0637 version of the V5-122P with the A6-1450 and 6 GB of RAM was discounted on Acer's US Store: down to $399.99 from the original list of $549. Free ground shipping.

Acer Store: Aspire V5-122P-0637 Ultra-thin Notebook

With all of the sub models, I get confused quick about which have the lighted KB and which do not. Other than what's listed by Kaotikfunk in the Owner's Thread: "The models ending in -0600 and -0649 are confirmed to have keyboard backlights. -0643 does not. . . ." which models have that feature is a crap shoot for me. A lot of contradicting, boiler plate info in item descriptions across the web. I ended up opting for the -0600 from amazon.

I couldn't resist. I was on late last night doing some shopping on Amazon, I added something to cart, and I had this laptop "saved for later" since a long time (well probably since davidricardo86 mentioned it here). It said the price had been updated to $379. I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Glad I did because no sooner did I buy it that I checked the listing again and it was back to $399. I know it's only $20, but it was my breaking point. I don't have a huge use for it, other than I really want to spend some time with Windows 8 as a tablet and the Atom Z just wouldn't cut it for me, seemed way too underpowered. This Temash chip seems at least twice as powerful, and Surface Pro at $800+ is ridiculous. It would be nice to have even a ULV Core i3 since it has dual channel memory support and 1600MHz, but anything respectible costs twice as much as this thing.

I am a bit disappointed that it isn't Kabini, but then again, they'd probably charge an extra $100 or so. I may need to probe your mind, davidricardo86 about running it at 1.4GHz.

I plan on installing an SSD as well.

It's funny. I always buy a decently powerful laptop, but am frequently afraid to take it with me for fear of breaking or losing or getting stolen so I always end up with some cheap laptop that I use away from home more often than my main laptop, lol.

Nice. An SSD is a must for this little guy. The Toshiba 5400RPM hard drive feels way too slow for me.

Remember the battery life isn't so great when you're pushing it. Were all waiting on those secondary batteries but Acer seems to be taking their sweet time with this.

I love how easy it is to open the case.

*ANY* HDD to me is too slow any more. :p - Have you put an SSD in yours yet? I'm thinking pretty much any SSD is better than a 5400RPM mobile HDD.

Extra battery would be nice, although I don't really plan on spending any extra money on it. 3-4 hours is adequate for me. But if they do offer one for reasonable price I might consider it.

That is great to hear. An Asus I have was a nightmare to replace the HDD with an SSD and even broke a few molded in plastic clips doing so.

I wish i could install OS X 10.8.4 on it and dual boot with Windows 8. I know Mountain Lion isn't fully touch-optimized, but neither is Windows 8 IMO. Mircosoft is ahead of Apple on this front too.

No I haven't put an SSD in mine. I am using an HGST 7200RPM 500GB 7mm HDD. While its noticeably faster than the OEM Toshiba, its no SSD. I'm considering the Samsung 840 Pro, Crucial M500, and the Samsung 840 EVO in 256GB-1TB capacity but I've been reluctant to pull the trigger.

Getting to the internals is easy, getting into the LCD looks like its hard. This notebook only has one WLAN antenna and adding another to the LCD bezel doesn't look like a walk in the park. I could be wrong.

Wow, I guess they did really skimp with a single wi-fi antenna. that seems odd though, since it has no ethernet port, it seems they'd at least have two wi-fi cables.

I went to best buy today and came face to face with this tiny machine. How come the outer material of this lappy felt very cold like it is some sort of metal eventhough everyone is saying it is plastic?

Is this an IPS panel touchscreen? Anyone knows the color gamut, contrast ratio etc???

Is the amazon model the one that comes with the backlit kb?? How long is the battery when only surfing on wifi?

I agree, the lid and palm rest do feel like metallic/alloy. I believe it is.

Everyone keeps calling it an IPS 10-input touchscreen but there's nothing officially stated by Acer that it is and what the specifications are. I will try and get a LCD part number and post back.

The Amazon model 0600 (and I think all the Amazon models) come with backlit keyboards. The Walmart and BestBuy models do not.

Battery life while surfing only is a realistic 3-4 hours. It will be less depending on the content and the rate at which that content is being downloaded/uploaded, streaming videos/, Facebook, YouTube, forums, etc. I'd imagine websites with less Flash-based content would fair better than those with it.

I think a review or two called it IPS. It is a very vibrant screen with great viewing angles whatever it is. It isn't a cheap TN panel that usually find their way on most notebooks. For < $400 it's one of the best quality laptops you can get. I wish there was an Intel ULV (not Atom, but like i3) with HD 4000/4200/4400 supporting dual channel RAM though with same config and I'd gladly pay $500 for that.
