is it possible to have to much power for your adapter?
    my laptop only needs 120W.

    No, not really.

As long as the power adapter supplies the right voltage (which I believe with our MSI notebooks is 19V) then it should be alright.

It's strange that MSI chose a 120W power supply for a notebook with a quad core CPU and 5870.

will using the 180w better than using 120w? or just more stable?

There is no point in going for 180W unless you're maxing out 120W.
A i7-720QM/ATI5870 combination might be close 120W and you could possibly push it over the edge if you overclock.

The 180W adapter will be larger than a 120W one, so if your notebook is running fine with a 120W adapter you might as well keep it.

But if you get any throttling of the CPU or GPU, that could be a reason to change to a 180W adapter.

And if you're buying a universal adapter, better go for 180W so you could use it in the future for other notebooks.

I picked up that same adapter on ebay a while ago for $20 shipped. It works but the thing I don't like about it is that it makes a rather noticable buzzing sound, probably because the adapter itself needs to do more work since it's only 2-pronged
