Why would I spend $50 on something I am just going to throw away?

I guess the term "budget PC" eludes you.

I've got this crappy old 13" HP that I use when I work on vehicles and such. Having a SSD is good for boot times and for when I inevitably throw it around, yet I don't feel the need to buy a flashy Samsung 850 for it.

And if it's an old notebook then it's very unlikely to include an M.2 socket for adding an SSD alongside a 2.5" hard drive. Some of those notebooks might, however, be able to use an mSATA SSD.

Adapters.... Or maybe someone wants to run one as their main drive. Sheesh.

It is no longer economically worth it if you need to buy an adapter to get it to work, and nobody with a computer that takes M.2 SSD's is going to want to use this as a main drive.
