Quick question...Do you leave it plugged in, and on, all the time? Does it power down automatically with your computer?

Have you done any research into the reliability?

I am definitely interested in purchasing one of these if they are reliable enough to leave connected all the time.

You cant honestly expect long term reliability with a product that has not been out for very long now can you?

Actually, it appears that most of these kind of drives (over 500gb) are either DOA, or fail sometime within the first 10-13 months, so yes, I do expect some sort of indication of at least the "near term."

Do a search and you will find plenty of cases of, for example, WD MyBooks failing within the first 10 months.

One of the problems may be the passive cooling. Another issue brought up in one review is the size of the disk.

The only thing that bugs me is the clicking noise(I hate any type of noise coming from computers, that`s why I sold my sager 5791) and that it powers down to a low state when not used, but powers back at full power in a few seconds.
    So far, perfect.
However, just 1 month uf usage.
Power on time per day ~ 10 hours.
It has a 2 year warranty so it`s still good.
I create backups every now and then...

Something bugs me when it comes to no name hard drives, my main reason to get a large external like this would be to archive and backup files. In other words my fail safe for data so it can not fail on me.

Id rather get a real brand unit like one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&N=2010150014 103530090&name=800GB and higher

They are only $119 as well and come with 3 year warranties.

The best thing you can do and what I plan to do is build a super cheap server for like $100 and toss a ton of drives in there and use a raid 1 array with windows server. Window Server will let automatically backup files for you and also you will have access to them from any of your PC's and even over the net!

HP Sells like a 1TB version complete for $700 but its a bad deal when the box is slow with barly $80 worth of parts, a $150 HDD and a I think the software is like $200.

In a year or so when my computer upgrade time c omes around instead of upgrading or building a new pc for use, I think I will do the server thing. I have lost data before and it really sucks when its important stuff like family pictures or hard to get files. I wanna do a killer 4TB+ server rig. I dont game much these days and I can probably build it for the cost of a new video card :p

Actually just had an idea, I mayyyy give into the overpriced HP model only because I think 30% cash back is still going on for ebay. If the price is right and I can cut it by $200 for the $600 lowest model $400 for the software & server with 500gb sounds kinda fair and I can upgrade it.

They are Fantom Greendrives, not nonames...
Fantoms are very good and popular drives, for that matter.

It is a Western Digital Green 1TB, arguable, one of the best drives in its category. Spins between 5.4k ad 7.2k but bests many current 1TB drives. The internal drive is a 3 platter, high consumer reliability, low price, low power, low sound, low temperature drive. I have no information on the Fantom case though. This setup is available around the web at an average price of $120. I am debating between the Green and Black versions of the internal drive, and then case options. FYI, the Black is a faster, louder, more expensive model. From what I have read, an enclosure like the Roswell is about $30 on top of a $100/$120 hdd. If the Fantom enclosure runs well, then this is a great deal for someone who needs an external drive but does not need it to be the fastest thing out there for the price.
