Kind of a stupid question I'm sure, but would it work as an external hard drive for a laptop? And yes, I realize it's not the most mobile hard drive, it would only be used when I was at home on a desk with it.

Yes, it just requires a power adapter to be plugged into the wall.

There have been several reviews on different sites claiming failure of this drive within a year, due, in part, to the fact that it relies on passive cooling.

I was getting ready to buy this, and put it in my "cart" at Dell, but then read the reviews.

Does anybody have any experience with this one?

Thanks, Nizzy. This is a GREAT deal. I have two 750GB personal media drives that fit into a drive bay on my desktop, and I really want something I can leave connected and "on" the entire time. I only put the personal media drives in when I am moving files or doing backups. Personally, I would like this WD because I like to have two different backups. (One personal media drive is devoted to storage only).

Again, thanks, I appreciate you posting this. I will keep thinking about it.
