Alienware is offering a holiday promotion with the purchase of any new Alienware system. You get a free Alienware TactX headset ($75 value) and mouse ($99 value). You can also just remove these from the configuration to get $174 off your order :D

Edit: You are no longer able to remove the headset and mouse to reduce the starting price.

How do you remove the headset and mouse? Can you only do it through calling because when I try to do it on the online website it gives me a configuration error. It doesn't let me remove them and I would love to get $175 off a m15x =)

How sure are you of that? I just had a 45 minute conversation with a dell sales rep.. and he insisted that if I tried to remove the Mouse & Headset options from the configuration (making it $174 cheaper on the shopping cart) that it wouldn't allow me to place the order because they have to come standard with it (I think that's bull but he insisted that's policy). He also implied that if I waited past the 19th when the deal ends and tried to order the same laptop configuration it would be more expensive, because the deal is not actually a 'free' anything, but simply a lowered starting price equaling the cost of the mouse and headset, but they still are forcing people to buy them & not allowing you to remove them to reduce the starting price.

Can anyone confirm/deny this either way? I am sitting here looking at a almost-completed order of a alienware laptop minus the headset & mouse, but I don't want to complete it if they're going to secretly try and bill me for those things anyway, or bill me a higher price later on after the deal ends.. was the sales rep just bullting me to try and coerce me into getting a headset/mouse I don't really need, under the guise of it being free when I can really just remove them from the order entirely?

I just checked the website, and you are right about the fact that you are no longer able to remove the headset and mouse from the package to reduce the price of the laptop. When this deal first surfaced, you were able to do just that...but I guess Dell has patched it since then.

Well.. I ordered a m15x night after making my earlier post and it let me place the order without the headset and mouse for $174 less...whether or not I get a call from Dell at some point before it's done is yet to be determined.. considering the deal itself is not a 'free' anything but simply a lowered starting price, and for insurance purposes they still charge you for the mouse/headset if you select them, I don't see anything wrong with what I did. They can keep the headset/mouse for all I care as long as I save the $174.

I just tried it again now and it let me add a standard m15x to a shopping cart without headset/mouse for $1,325.00.. so in theory it would let you place that order if you wanted. It does say "compatibility issues" in the configuration screen before you finish it but it also says the same thing if you simply remove the free "pre-installed STEAM client" option, so they surely can't be serious that they won't sell you a laptop without all of those non-essential things set in stone.

Bottom line.. It would be insanely stubborn of them to say "We can't sell you a laptop without external accessories you don't need!".. it would be like say.. a gun dealer saying "i'll sell you this shotgun, BUT not without a side saddle, pistol grip, heat shield, etc. for an extra $174".. that just wouldn't happen when they can just as easily sell you the product without the frills. there's an old saying about "the customer is always right".. so either what i'm doing here is allowed & the dell rep was bullting me, or its a failure on their web programming team.. either way i'm a) getting it for $174 cheaper or b) cancelling the order if they try to bill me more, and then dedicating a good amount of time to telling people how crappy and inflexible dell has become.

That's really weird, because when I went on the website earlier today, when I tried to remove the headset from the configuration it gave me a COMPATIBILITY ISSUE...and it made me put it back in.

Well, when I left out any one of the following: TactX Headset, TactX Mouse, STEAM client, it would give that same "compatibility issue" in orange, and when I tried to advance to checkout it would give me a pop-up dialog box with two options: click OK to correct the issues, or click cancel.. when I clicked cancel it moved me onwards to the checkout & I was able to complete the order as normal.. so despite that orange warning text I was still able to put an order in without those accessories, but whether or not they'll move forward and ship it to me without incident is yet to be seen.

Overnight it went from "processing order" to "In production" although the cost of the laptop is still on hold in my bank account and not officially withdrawn yet, i'm halfway expecting a call or email from them in the next few days this, upon which i'm going to give them the ultimatum: sell me the laptop minus the unnecessary headset & mouse like a rational company would, or cancel the order.. either that or it will slip under the radar, something i'm sure happens from time to time in large companies.

After two months on the waiting list and two cancellations later I am finally going to get my Alienware , hopefully tomorrow. For all the guys that already have the alienware with the tactx headphones. Are the headphones any good? I need to know how they sound before I place the order. I currently have the TekNmotion pulsewave and this things are awesome. Check them out at newegg. The sound coming out of this thing is incredible, but I really like the alienware, because they match the notebook... Come on guys,, post some reviews....

The TactX headphones are rebranded Steelseries 5H headphones. Look up the reviews for those. They are outstanding headphones for the price.
