guys - i just bought the asus g1s-x1 (t7300 cpu) at best buy for $1137.99 (with tax, my total came to $1236.48) - they have these things on clearance - im assuming, to make room for the t7500 models
i say ymmv because if youre familiar with best buy's clearance policy - not every store has the same price - in fact, here in chicago, some stores still have the price listed at $1749 in store (even though its online for $1599)
go to your local best buy - find some dude in the computer section - and ask him to check the following sku for stock and price: 8397594
theyll be able to tell you which store in your area is selling it for the cheapest - honestly, i wasnt even CONSIDERING this notebook because it was a bit out of my price range - but i was in bb today and saw it LABELLED at $1399.99 - i looked at the tag and saw the golden word: "Clearance"
having worked at best buy for a few years, i knew the policy - i immediately grabbed the tag (for fear that it was the last unit) and asked the guy to check the prices - he found a store 5 minutes away that had "five" in stock for $1137.99 - when i got there, i found out that they actually only had ONE left in stock - brand new - unopened - im so stoked i cant even stand it
heres a scan of my receipt in case you guys want to attempt a pricematch (hey, you never know, right?):
![]()
(click on the imageshack thumbnail for a full-size version that you can print up)
note - the receipt shows "t7500" - this is actually for the t7300 cpu - theres an error in the best buy system that shows t7500 - however, when the best buy guy printed up the spec sheet - it shows c2d t7300 on there (honestly, they brought the box for the x3 down first - because they look EXACTLY the same - the upc code and sku numbers, however, are different)
-
i hope you got a psp with adh on that!
-
Isn't this thread kicking around somewhere else on this forum? I went to BB today to see the G1S, it's $1499. There were none on clearance. You got lucky, it's extremely unlikely anyone else is going to score this deal.
-
^ you have to note - best buy now carries two models of the g1s - one with the t7500 processor and one with the t7300 processor
the t7500 processor is not on sale at all
the t7300, however, is entering into clearance - the way clearance items work at best buy is kind of odd - it goes on a store-by-store basis - most of the time, prices change in the computers and no one in the store is even notified
did you ask a sales rep to actually type the sku into a computer to check the price? the first store i went to had it tagged at $1399 - i asked the rep to type in the sku and a list popped up of all of the stores in the area along with their prices - sure enough, one store had it at $1136.99
i immediately drove to the store to pick it up - guess what? it was tagged at $1399.99 - i asked the rep how many he had left in stock and they had one - he scanned it and, lo and behold, $1136.99 (the sales guy was so shocked he told everyone else in the home office department about it - that is, after he verified the price with a manager - NONE of them had a clue it had dropped in price)
if anyone attempts to get this deal - ask someone to physically type the sku into the computer - theyll be able to tell which stores have it for what prices -
Hey thanks for posting this deal, but I called the only BB in my area that has it and they said they needed the transaction number which starts with 0313. I would really appreciate the number so I can successfully price match it. This laptop is an amazing deal, I would love to take advantage of it!
-
-
^ yeah thats what it sounds like - id rather not give them the actual transaction number (as that contains my credit card and rewardzone information) - but if you tell them to call store 313 (evanston, illinois) they will be able to get the price with just the sku
EDIT - HOLY CRAP! i just called the store - gave the guy the sku number and he told me it was $961.99! im gonna head over there to see if i can get a price match - you gotta love best buy's clearance system! usually, the final price ends up being 75% off! -
Where do you live?
-
Oh, so you think that I should ask them to call the store instead?! If it is indeed 962$, then please let me know, I can hold off buying it for a few more days (they only have 2 left + the display) I hope.
Lithus, that was exactly what they were trying to do because in their computers the price is listed as 1400$
Anyways, let me know what happens with the price match, and how to get the same thing here (California). Btw, just as a side note, does the laptop come with bag + mouse? I know its a great deal, just wondering. -
You can't price match a receipt...
-
Oh really? The Best Buy guy must have been misleading me. He was asking to have the original reciept, but when I explained that I only had a scan of it he asked for the # which started with the store #, and the 16 digit Val #. Since I didn't have the 0313#, I didn't give him either, and asked why it was necessary. He said that he needed to reprint the receipt and then from there he could price match it.
Lithus, are you sure? I trust you, but I don't know of any other way to price match. -
Go in and talk to a manager or the computer's supervisor. Tell them that you know the computer is on clearance and ask them if they'll strike a deal.
Technically, you're not supposed to even look up a receipt that's not yours. -
Ok, I will try that once I hear whether or not the 962$ deal is real or not. Do you think they will do it? Or should I first ask them to call the #313 store and ask for their price?
-
holy crap - i just got back from bb - i just walked up to customer service with my receipt and said: "i just bought this computer last week - i called in today and it looks like the price went down"
the kid scanned in the receipt - said: "yep - you want me to just credit your card?" - i said yes and he handed me back another receipt that says "price match" on top - credited me back $190!
also - i thought this was interesting considering i was told i purchased the last one:
they still have the display model if anyone in the area is interested (but the price is ACTUALLY $961.99 - even though its a display - i still think its a steal)
when i bought the computer last week - the tag was at $1300 something - i asked them if they had them in stock first - the guy said yeah - then i asked him to double check the price - thats when he found out it was 1136.99 (and im assuming im the reason they printed up a new price tag)
i swear - the way best buy clearance works is nuts - no one in the store even knows the price changes - it just changes in the system - and whats worse, it changes on a store-by-store basis - unless one of the employees actually types that sku in or scans the box in - they have NO idea
there are stores in chicago thats still selling these things at $1549 - which is currently the advertised price - evanston is a suburb directly next to chicago - these stores are about 7 miles apart and the difference in price is over $500
to the guy looking to price match - just ask the rep to call best buy store 313 in evanston illinois - i didnt even ask for the computer department - i just called in and asked the first guy who answered: "if i give you a sku number, can you check the price?" - thats all they have to do
the phone number over there is 847-570-0450 - they are currently in holiday hours so they are open until 10pm cst (another hour and a half) - if you want to try this tonite -
-
^ oh i know its store-by-store - i think i actually stated that in an earlier comment...
but sometimes the managers will work with you -
Awesome deal, good for you!
-
Thanks so much Lithus + Kricket!
I am gonna go try this out at my Best Buy tomorrow. If I can convince my parents that is. They are sooo convinced that a better deal will come on Black Friday or after Christmas or when Nvidia 9 series comes out (yes, my dad knows about computers). But I am pretty sure that this is as good as it gets! What do you guys think?
I even offered to not open it until Jan 31st (last day for holiday returns). But they always have an alternative scenario -
There may be better deals on Black Friday, but I doubt it will be this deal. If you want to get it, go for it. I don't think much will compare, since Black Friday will be clearance of $599 models for the most part.
-
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I don't want a laptop just for the sake of getting one. I want one that will last a while.
Btw, Kricket, when you said 962 for display, does that mean that only the display is on that price? Did they match the price even though your laptop was bought brand new?
I'm curious because that info may come in handy when I go to pricematch. -
^ yeah - they pricematched for me - but i believe they only have the display unit left right now
EDIT - i originally bought it brand new last week - i just went in today to get the price matched -
Very good deal. Congrats on the new notebook!
-
the law of technology: price of technology ALWAYS decreases as time goes on. no matter what the sale or price is, its better to wait and buy later. thats if your willing to sacrifice time for foregone use of that technology and money.
-
^ another law of technology: if you always wait and buy later - youll NEVER buy anything - because the evolution of technology (especially computer tech) never slows
of course - one year from today, youll be able to get a computer with the EXACT same specs as the g1s-x1 for $400-500 - but by that time, quad-core chips will be commonplace in notebooks...
so youll wait another year - and then quad-core notebooks will be cheap - but another new tech will be commonplace - of course youll want that, so youll wait another year - and the cycle will continue endlessly
right now - i dont think youll find a better deal - $961.99 for a notebook of this caliber is VERY hard to come by - there will be deals on black friday for comptuers priced at $300, $400, $500, whatever - but im willing to bet ANYTHING, the computers priced at $1000 wont have the same features and capabilities of this laptop (unless its one of those - "2 per store" ads used to lure customers in - and those are always difficult to come away with) -
-
Btw, Kricket, could you please scan the receipt of the price adjusted laptop? You can black out all of your sensitive information, its just in case that when I call the Illinois branch it is closed. I'm on the West Coast, and I don't have access to a car before 8 PM which is 11 PM on the East Coast. Could you post it here or PM it to me? Thanks!
-
Just a question regarding this, why is best buy only giving 1 year warranty on asus notebook? isn't it 2 years on all asus notebook? Thanks
-
Thanks so much Kricket!
About the warranty, I think that it is worth it to buy the 2 year ADH (accidental plan) if you really think you will need it. I have not owned a laptop in the past, but for other electronics (gaming consoles + other electronics), it has come in handy. The manafacturer's warranty (in my experience, I don't know about ASUS) is very picky in what is defective and what is damage not covered by warranty.
When my PSP UMD drive stopped working (a defect) about six months after I bought it, Sony would NOT replace it, but my warranty at Best Buy gave me a new one at no cost.
Just my two cents on the issue, thanks so much, Kricket, again. I can't wait to get it today! -
^ good luck! i just called in to check the price again - still at $961.99
-
not true, the price vs performance is always best after christmas. thats when the price is best. Also, new products making there way to the market will further reduce the price, making it better to wait a mere 2 months.
about prices of technology, although you may be right that waiting for lower prices in technology will result in perpetual postponement. The reality of it is that processing power usually reaches a mini plateau until the next big thing. 2 or 3 years ago the processing power for a desktop pretty much reached a point where it could easily support later games like bioshock and CSS. If you built the computer yourself it would last you way long for like 1000 bucks. i think that eventually laptops will reach that point, unless every consumer is going to be using their laptop as a server rig or cia data processing mainframe. -
^ we'll see what you can get in 2 months - we'll update this thread - im gonna go ahead and say you wont get anything like this system for $961 - we'll match spec for spec to see what the "best" deals are
yes - after christmas prices are always the best - but this isn't your run of the mill deal here - this is a goof due to best buys ridiculous automated clearance system - if any of the buyers for best buy saw this system was selling for $961, they would change the price immediately
im telling you - you will NOT find a deal like this, even after christmas (unless you mean 6 months down the line) - and thats the truth
EDIT - and keep in mind bb has a price matching policy as well - we dont even know if $961 is going to be the lowest price - i bought it at 1136.99 and THAT was a steal - heck, i would have bought this system for 1299 and it still would have been a bargain - if it goes even lower, its just icing on the cake - lol
EDIT - im looking at your sig - youre looking for a 15" laptop with a decent graphics card, a good warranty, a t7500 processor and a gig of ram - for under a thousand dollars - here you have one of the best graphics cards out for laptops right now, 2 gigs of ram, and a great warranty - the only thing with a "lesser" spec is the t7300 processor - and its a mere 0.2GHz slower (200 Mhz) in clock speed (which we all know is like a drop in the bucket) than the t7500 - in fact, this computer seems BETTER (the graphics card and 2 gigs of ram arguably make it a "lot" better) than the specs you are looking for yet the price is the same... -
that is very true. a very good move on best buys part. who are they competing with again? oh right compusa's buy at cost deal.
anyways those of you that constantly want or need the best technology out, i thank you for the ever decreasing prices in technology. so get out there and buy buy buy!
just don't go bankrupt, george washington will hate you. and so will honest taxpayers.
EDIT: oh ya, well im stranded at college and definitely not putting it on credit. Gonna try to squeeze it out of my parents, i love being a kid.
Ya, buying a laptop with 1gb RAM and preferably a crappy HD would allow me to avoid some of the inflated price. get 3 gb somewhere on the internet and a nice hd on this forum is probably the best way to do it. -
^ oh come now - no need to get rude - i thank those people for the ever decreasing prices in technology too - just 3 weeks ago i would have had to pay $1749 for this laptop!
and fortunately, i dont have to worry about going bankrupt just yet (knock on wood) - i definitely understand its tough when youre in college - heck, i had it rough through college too - it got even worse during law school (talk about starving student!)...
i actually set out to get a $1000 laptop, much like you - something i could just put on my debit card and not have to worry about - i guess i just happened to be in the right place at the right time and got a computer twice as good as anything i had seen in a similar price range (save for the refurbs - but even those werent quite as good as this model)
i suppose if i wasnt paying for the laptop myself, i wouldnt really bother researching current prices looking for a best "bang-for-your-buck" laptop either (but having done that for a couple of months, i realize that i came out WAY ahead)...
EDIT - and i also suppose that if you do get the specs you're looking for in a ~$1000 notebook, and then buy the hd and ram yourself, youll get a comparable notebook to this one (or at least, pretty darn close) for only a couple hundred dollars more (which is still an excellent bargain)... -
"...you probably think this song is about you, your so vain..."
lol i wasn't directing that to you, just to the general public.i don't even know you.
-
Alright, I'm trying to find one of these nearby and each best buy I've called said it's out of stock. Is there any chance that's just because it was discontinued, or is it for sure not there?
-
^ im guessing they probably dont have any - this one is going to be replaced by the x3 (which comes with the t7500 processor)
i would ask one of the home office reps if he could input the sku into the computer to see which (if any) surrounding best buys actually have one - thats how i found mine - i was at a different store and asked the kid to check the computer to see which bb's had them instock and for what price they were selling them
im guessing at this price, they are hard to keep in stock -
I checked a bunch of stores with that method *sigh* I guess I'll just wait for the next unbearably good deal.
-
so, obviously, your carly simon (or nine inch nails) reference couldnt possibly be directed at me either - so why even bring it to that level? i dont understand why youre even still debating in this thread if nothing here is of interest or value to you - obviously, a LOT of people think this is a fantastic deal - im just trying to help them - theres no need to pollute the thread with presumptuous (and frankly, pompous) put-downs
(and, btw, its "you're so vain")
lets try to keep the rest of this thread on topic - if you somehow feel that im personally attacking you, i apologize - thats not my intention (im only trying to defend myself from your attacks) - but if you'd like to address it further, please feel free to pm me - lets put this thread back on the right path so that, maybe, we can get people the computers that they want at prices they appreciate
EDIT - this is the "notebook & techbargains" forum, afterall... -
hey what's up guys! Long time lurker first time poster.
I bought this laptop a few weeks ago for $1599. I went in today for a price match and although I did get some back, it wasn't what I was expecting. I shopped at store #456 in Woodbridge NJ. Apparently they cannot price match to out of market locations. At least that is what I was told. (tried to get a pricematch to the 313 location) They were able to bring up the listings of my local best buys and the current pricing for my area. Apparently it hasn't gone down further than $1399 out here. So they price matched me to $1399 and I got $214 back. Not bad but not as good as you other guys. Not sure about the validity of this price match policy so please someone chime in with more experience and info. Thanks!

Hello, I come with updates!
I just came back from the only BB in my area which had the G1S-X1 (which is, to all the doubters, amazing). There, the set price was 1400$, and in the computer it said that the model was "Discontinued". Anyways, I showed the receipts of Kricket's purchase to the manager there, and he said that he would not match it! I was obviously surprised, and a little pissed that he was so unbending. Finally, he agreed to settle for 1137$, but was acting very condescendingly and was patronizing me and acting like he was allowing me to get away with murder or something. My father, who was with me (and has the money) was really pissed off at that point and basically said "To hell with you" to the manager. This was not as all as I had hoped, and I am trying to persuade my father to reconsider, as 1137$ is a GREAT deal still. I am also going in the other direction, by calling BB customer service to figure out why prices are not transferable between their own locations. They try to sound great by matching "competitor's prices" but fail to match their own.
Anyways, I'll update you as it goes on, and if it doesn't work out, I guess I will wait until next year, because this is the best deal that will be around for a while. -
seeing as you already have the computer - just make sure to call into your store every few days to see if the price has been lowered at all - from what ive seen, it seems that the price points are: 1399, 1311, 1136, and 961 so far
@ipoodz - thats ridiculous - bb is the most unorganized organization i think ive ever dealt with - i actually had an issue with them a few weeks ago when i bought an hd-dvd player - i bought the thing on a friday and it came with 2 free dvd's of my choice - i was thrilled - brought it home, tore apart my entertainment center, installed the thing and was a happy camper
on sunday (yes - 2 days later) - bb had a NEW promotion whereby you get 3 free dvds of your choice - "great!", i thought - i went to the store with my receipt and asked them to give me my third free dvd - the customer service girl told me that i needed to bring EVERYTHING on the receipt back to the store (the dvd player in box with all the accessories as well as the 2 dvd's) - return it - and rebuy it under the new promotion (!!!) - i asked her, "so, if i purchased a 50" plasma with this and mounted it on my wall, you would make me go home, unmount it, and bring it in?" - she said: "yes" - i spoke to the manager but he seemed to have some sort of comprehension problem and couldnt understand why i didnt want to go home and bring back my dvd player...
i called best buy corporate from the store (888-best-buy) and spoke to one of the reps - he was stunned - apologized profusely for the (his words) "incompetent best buy personnel" i was dealing with and offered to send me a $35 gift card - which i gladly accepted and received two days ago
drawn out story - but maybe you should try calling the 888-best-buy number to see what they can do - who knows? according to bb.com, the computer is still in stock and available for shipment - maybe you'll be able to order one through the phone rep -
my store just sold out so I guess I won't be able to get the lower price at all. I think I only have one other Best Buy around me that still has it.
Eh, least I got some money back.
-
^ even if they are sold out - youre still entitled to a pricematch during the pricematch period (im not sure if its 14 days or 30 days for notebooks)
-
Kricket, thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one who encounters these problems! I felt really strange dealing with the employees who seemed to just not care about the customer's best interest, but rather how to put in the least effort into the situation.
I will definitely try calling customer service and explaining what went on. Hopefully since it is not regional, but nationwide, they will have more sense in them. -
LOL ok ok i get it. Territorial over the first big post (and what a whopper it turned out to be), resorting to technicalities and what not. Its all good, maybe an opinion about future prices was pertinent, but maybe not in the control-hungry world of a blogger.
Since this post has unofficially crawled under the dying veil of communism, i will perform my duties as a comrade.
Omgosh, what a great deal! Its so awesome! and um Kricket your the best! Your blog is awesome too!!
No really, im just bustin yo bizalls. 900 some odd dollars for G1S-X1 thats sick.
Thanks for expanding this forum. -
good luck with your notebook search! -
Kricket, does your G1S-X1 have HDMI output? I looked at the BB specs for it and it does not.
-
^ yes it does - i noticed that the tags printed up by best buy dont list all of the features - i have hdmi and e-sata as well
-
I went to Best Buy last Saturday here in Vernon Hills, IL. originally looking for a GPS, but when I saw this baby on display at the clearance price of only$1,049.00, I knew I had to take it home!
SWEEEET DEAL! I'm sure the remaining 4 units wouldn't last until Black Friday
Any idea where to get the Asus backpack for it? I heard it's pretty small though. If I wouldn't go for the Asus backpack, any other nice alternatives? Note: The G1S seems to be a bit larger than your regular 15.4".
Asus G1S-X1 (Best Buy) - $1137.99!!!! - YMMV
