As a warning, be prepared to wait a long time to get the MIR. I bought this drive back in mid-January with the same rebate (though the price was much higher). The claim was approved within about 10 days, but only yesterday (March 8) was the payment sent for processing. So figure on it being another good 2-3 weeks before it arrives.

    Lulz :D

That's lightning quick. I guess you're new to MIR. On average it takes me 6-10 weeks to get my check back from various mfg's.

You guess wrong, smart guy. Maybe I've been extremely lucky, but rarely have I had to wait more than 6 weeks for a rebate check. A Kingston SSD I bought about 3 weeks after this DVD drive got the check in my hands this week. I've had similar experiences dating back to my college days, which was nearly 10 years ago.

Well, that's to bad it is taking so long. At least, you know you will be receiving it. : )

^^That. I think it depends on who you dealing with, allotted rebate time-lines, etc. :)

I have had some take 4 weeks, some as long as 10.

Mine arrived yesterday, but I'm having some problems. Why does my Asus UL30 not recognize this drive? It powers up (LEDs illuminate and I can hear it spinning) and Windows 7 automatically detects the hardware but then says "device driver software was not successfully installed." Yes, I'm using the Y-cable, tried different USB port combinations, tried to Uninstall the drive from Device Manager and let it detect again.

Asus' website doesn't have downloadable drivers for this optical drive. So now what can I try? Installing the accompanying software (from the CDROM, which I had to copy over the network since the optical drive wasn't detected) didn't help either. Did everyone else's drive just plug-n-play?

[EDIT: this may not be the proper forum for technical support issues, so I apologize in advance to the moderator and will cross-post this in the Asus forum.]

I'd say you have a defective drive. Mine works perfectly. If you bought it from Amazon, you should have a very easy time exchanging it or getting a refund and re-ordering.

Well it works (plug-n-play) on my 9 year old WinXP computer, and a google search shows a lot of hits for the same problem with the Asus SDRW-08 D1S (vs. 08 D2S) so this must be a common occurrence. Might be time for RMA with Amazon as you suggest. *sigh*
