That price is absurd, in a bad way. You used to be able to buy them new for half that price, and that was before they had tons of competition. Still a better deal than buying any Beats garbage, I guess.

That model was never half the price.. They have lower models that are currently on sale for like $55 -- maybe that is what you are talking about? These headphones are fairly priced for what you get.

Yes, it was. The ATH-M50 used to cost half the current on-sale price you listed.

But...but...the M50x comes with detachable cable and color options!

But seriously, the original M50 came out many years ago. Ever heard of inflation? Also, audiophile equipment are a good long-term investment precisely because they don't depreciate at, say, the same rate as computer hardware. Revolutionary advancements almost never happen anymore. Which is why old stuff like ATH-M50 and Senn HD 600/650 never really drop in price.

    Found a much better price, $129: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=ATHM50

Many years ago? 2007. Their "inflation" only started when they became so popular. They sold for less than $100 but were the best sub-$200 headphones. I got my pair new in early 2010 for $85. Their price increases plus new competitors makes it hard to recommend them in 2015.

This thread makes me want to dig up my pair and fix them.

I was barely in high school in 2007, so that's many years ago for me. :p

But yeah, I agree. At the current going rate for the M50/M50x I'd rather pick up an open back like Senn HD 558 or a 598 on sale.

Edit: Hold on ATH-M50x is more expensive than HD 598. Say what? That's baloney. No wonder you called it overpriced LOL.

Audio Technica's have indeed gone up in price. The going rate of these M50x's prompted me to think they're better than my ATH-AD700's which I paid $103.99 for in 2007. The ATH-AD700 goes for about 50-100% more than that now (at least according to Amazon) ...don't know if they're discontinued and not many are left or what.

I love Audio Technica. Every time I see some idiot walking around with $300 Beats I can only shake my head and be wither impressed by their marketing or that individuals gullibility. ATs are half the price and many times the quality.

They aren't discontinued. Audio Technica has simply raised their prices considerably as their products have become more mainstream.
