I bought it yesterday at Best Buy and then bought 512mb RAM for it at Circuit City for 40 dollars AR.
-
I bought it yesterday, ordered me a stick of ram from new egg ocz memory, ddr2
-
that is a fantastic deal, here's a link to it at BestBuy
-
of anyone that bought this, can you bump your memory past 64 meg in the bios? I havent upgraded my memory yet, new egg hasnt sent it yet, could it be because the system memory is only 256 it wont allow it past 64, until I upgrade? Thanks. So
far I like it other than the fact I cant play a game on it yet
it does other things fine though. -
the battery only lasts an hour...but recharges pretty quick...still giving it the once over.
-
It's Now Sold Out!
-
My local store had about 20 left in their "cage" at the top of the shelf when I went monday. The guy said they got about 35 in for the sale. So check your local best buy.
-
I'm getting 1:30 to 1:45 on my battery. But that's with silent fan mode and wireless on 10mW. Of course this is on a light load.
-
Try undervolting it. You might get 2 hrs out of it
.
-
How's the screen? I've heard conflicting reports on whether it is Matte or Glossy finish?
Also some states reportedly sold it for $399? -
I think it is a matte finish, but i am new to notebooks(it looks matte to me). It is my first one. I have only had desktops for years.
I get 1 hour battery life when I run a virus scan, (I know it doesnt have a virus, just running it under a load to try it out) It will do fine, I get my memory today according to UPS it is out for delivery. I will try some games tonight on it -
The screen is a 15" Matte finish 1024x768 LCD. And in order to get 128mb for the shared video (ATI 200m) you need to bump up the RAM to more than 256MB. Haven't tried undervolting yet. But running it on silent mode seems to last a bit longer.

Don't these come with a 4 cell batttery? I think you can get an 8 cell from Toshiba for it. Being double the battery, that'll double battery life.
-
This thing plays guild wars great. After I bumped the ram up, I am impressed with it. I am able to do some stuff now.
-
I actually prefer matte over glare. Did your screen have light leakage or bad pixels? Are the speakers decent?
Can it run Google Earth with the extra RAM?

I know that some low end Acers, such as the Aspire 3002, have a four-cell, and get less than an hour on battery. -
My doesn't have leakage or bad pixels as I could see. I didn't try to run that google applet; however, I ran ArcGIS v. 9 well on this $399.99 lappy
BTW, I have total 1280 MB RAM. DDR2 is cheap nowadays. Morover, I learned the HD is Toshiba branded w/5400 rpm and 16 MB cache! Good value indeed.
-
speakers are pretty good. I just put on my head phones and get excellent sound. But the speakers arent bad.
Never ran google earth. But it plays games like DUngeon siege and guild wars fine. I will be buying another stick of ram soon. This lap top is a darn good deal at $450. I am happy. -
Google Earth is quite cool (free-links above) so if you guys get it to work on this notebook I'd be interested thanks.
Yeah I didn't expect a subwoofer on it but hoped the speakers would be ok & glad to hear the LCD doesn't have light leakage commonly reported on recent Dell notebooks. No bad pixels always a definite bonus.
I love the idea of sub $500 (particularly 15") notebooks as much as I love high-end lines-the whole spectrum.
Let me know how much RAM you have if you get Google Earth to run.. -
I have 640 megs now (a 512 and 256 with 128 given to video) and it runs fine

First post on this site but I've been reading all of the great info here for a while. I actually found about this computer here and then saw Best Buy's ad in the Palm Beach Post, I couldn't get there fast enough.
I bought this computer at Best Buy in West Palm Beach for $399. I picked up an OZC 1gb stick of ram for $80 at Newegg and a 8 cell 4300mah battery at www.brilliantstore.com for $88 shipped and this computer is running great. With the 8 cell battery I'm getting about 3:30-3:45; with the stock 4 cell 2000mah I was getting about 1:30-1:40. The part # for the 8 cell, if anybody's interested is PA3420U-1BRS. I'm able to run Google earth just fine. Screen looks great no light leaks or bad pixels, it is a matte screen by the way, which I actually prefer. This is an awesome deal for the $. Thanks for all the excellent info I've picked up here. -
Thanks peeps, I remember I was so close to going to BestBuy on the 5th to get this for just $399+tax but in NY they sell out almost instantly with lines around the corner (well on Black Friday they did anyhow) & I had a trip to get ready for. I'll keep my eye out for it going on sale again as well as other sub $500s.
Thanks for sharing, -
Yea this labtop is great, I bought mine for 400+tax last weekend! The only quip I have about it is it is sluggish running a few applications simultaneously. Does anyone know the specific type of ram this baby takes? I know it is pc4200 ddr2, but what I don't know if it is DIMM or SODIMM or whatever. Once I know, I will probably get a stick off newegg.
And also, if I put a 512 stick in it, do I have to match that 512 with another 512? My friend told me he had to do that on his labtop, ie he couldnt mismatch RAM sizes.
By the way, I tried to play Battlefield 1942 on this (with no additional RAM added) and its a bit sluggish. Do you think the added RAM will help? I sure hope so.

I am running a 512 stick and a 256 stick. No issues with running 2 programs at once. Games play great on it. Just tell them you want the PC4200
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820227106
that is the ram I used with no problem.
Yes Ram will make it zoom, dont forget to go into your bios and bump the video memory to 128 also.
f2 on the bootup screen. -
thanks rollntider for the info, I plan on buying a stick this weekend from newegg. also, i'm curious to know what games you are running on it?
-Phil -
So far Guild wars, Dungeon Siege ...My wife plays Sims 2, I havent tried Battlefield 2 yet...Been playing Guild wars
-
So OCZ, are they are reputable brand? I haven't heard much about them, and I don't want to buy something thats going to last for a few weeks then fail. I might go with Kingston or Muskin instead if they are a few bucks more...
-
OCZ is like a name brand but usually the hard core crowd uses. That is their light version. I have used OCZ in the past and never had any trouble with them. They are a name brand, but like for the hard core crowd (if you will) I trust OCZ. I have used kingston and liked them and never used mushkin.
This is all from desktop experiance. This is my first lap top in years. The last one I had was a pentium 90 (DELL) -

I've got OCZ in my notebook, it is very good quality.
If you are going for value-oriented RAM, I recommend Corsair ValueRAM or Kingston. OCZ is more for performance (not that it matters). -
Just make sure your laptop isn't on silent mode. Silent mode decrease the performance of your laptop by a lot.
Oh and the stick of 512mb RAM I added is from Kingston. Their Value RAM series. Working fine so far

HI,
I bought it for $440 at BB on the 5th. yesterday, I put a 512mb PC4200 444 1.8v stick in it. then, my laptop couldn't boot up at all, even after that I took out the added memory. fortunately, toshiba replace a new one, but now I'm so afraid of touching the memory again. Does anyone know what wrong? I read somewhere that 2 memories have to be matched in capacity. Is that true? -
Your memory sizes don't have to match. I have one 256MB and one 512MB in my laptop right now. I don't know what went wrong. Maybe something shorted out when you were adding the memory? Maybe you should make sure the 512MB stick you got isn't defective? Other than that I dunno what happened. Normally you just take off the cover and snap the memory module into place and you're good to go. Oh and what brand is the memory and where did you get it from?
-
Thanks. The brand is hynix. I've got it from ebay. You may right, can't trust ebay people. I don't know how I can test the memory. Should buy another one?
-
Hi,
I just installed an additional 512mb RAM stick in my laptop. First, I put it in the available(on top) slot. The system can not regconize it at all. Then, I change the bigger Ram 512mb to the bottom slot which may be the primary slot as I supposed, and put the 256mb the the on on top. It works. Now my laptop runs really fast. Is it odd? Does any one have the same problem?.
By the way, I purchase a brand new Samsung 512 ram(exactly the same part number with the 256mb in my laptop) from ebay for $40 shipped. -
I put my bigger ram on the bottom slot so when I upgrade the 356 I would not have to handle the 512 stick again.

Hi everybody,
I was recently at Best Buy to buy a Gateway that was on sale which had been sold out and to make a long story short I ended up with an L25 for $450
Great all around deal for the price, I added 1 GB Ram ($90) and the thing will play Battlefront I and II smoothly! The only downside is the battery life. I highly recommend the L25 if you can get your hands on it. -
I have a spare 256mb for sale in NY 10021 if anyone wants it? (basically the stick that came with the L25-S1216 - I upgraded 2 x 1gb brand new).
Payment by paypal, $20 plus shipping.
email me dean'at'cognation.net if you want it.
Cheers,
Dean
