saw that earlier but isn't really a deal....it is 20 bucks off :/

True, but it's rare to see a discount on the M4 512 at all. The 256 and 128 are "on sale" a lot, but waiting for that 512 to drop below the magic $400 price point has been an exercise in futility. I've been watching it for a couple months now, since it's the one on the top of my list. Still, paying that much more per gb for a SSD just because it happens to larger than 256gb sort of irks me. In most things, a larger quantity nets you a larger discount. I've never quite understood why SSD's follow backwards logic. As I understand it, the actual controller doesn't change, so I don't understand where the increased cost comes from.

It's really not higher quantity. You're thinking about a discount for buying many of a particular unit. In this case, your comparing the price of two different single storage units.
You're really buying a quantity of 1 either way. -
It's a higher quantity of memory chips in the same package, so in that sense it is a matter of quantity. They solder on a few more chips but otherwise it's no more expensive than adding those chips.

Tempting, very tempting. I want a 512GB SSD like this M4 to go into my optibay, that way ill be able to have all my data on me at all times, plus 2 external eSATA HDDs for my redundancy backups. I might bite once the prices go under $300.

I got mine for $350 from Tiger Direct late June recently, along with another 5% cashback. I think our target price should be 350 or less...

Somehow I missed that sale, wish I hadn't. Definitely would have picked it up in June.

Awesome. Opted for the 256GB for now, but definitely a good price.
