This one came out of left field, but it seems Dell is now offering the Inspiron 1525 notebook with Windows XP (via the Windows Business Bonus/XP Pro downgrade option)! The price is $150, which isn't exactly cheap.

The good news- the 20% off $999+ Inspiron coupon code (valid thru 10/31) applies to models configured with XP as long as they meet the $$$ requirements.

    Here are a few examples-

    For $799.20 ($999.00 minus 20%)-
    DELL Inspiron 1525
Midnight Blue (or other color choice)
    2.1GHz Intel T8100
    Vista Business Bonus/XP Downgrade
    WXGA+ (1440x900) LCD
    2GB RAM
    160GB Hard Drive
    DVD RW
    Intel X3100 integrated graphics
    Dell 1505-N wireless
    6-cell Battery

    For $803.20 ($1004.00 minus 20%)-
    DELL Inspiron 1525
    Jet Black
    2.0GHz Intel T5800
    Vista Business Bonus/XP Downgrade
    WXGA+ (1440x900) LCD
    2GB RAM
    250GB Hard Drive
    DVD RW
    Intel X3100 integrated graphics
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless
    2.0mp Webcam
    9-cell Battery

I just noticed that a few minutes ago, browsing around Dell's site cause I'm bored. :p
Too bad they don't offer Vista Ultimate + XP downgrade like the business line.

Excuse my thick-headedness, but what is 150$? Is the discount 150$?

The base Inspiron 1525 has Windows Vista Home Basic as the standard O/S and has a starting price of $499. Choosing the Vista Business Bonus (XP Downgrade) option adds $150 the base price- so the most basic configuration with XP would be $499 plus $150, which is $649.

The less-expensive way to get XP would be to buy a disc from Newegg for $89.99, order an Inspiron with Vista Home Basic and do the XP install yourself! The only significant difference I can think of is that the $90 version of XP is XP Home and it's XP Professional being offered from Dell.

The most annoying task when doing a Vista-to-XP conversion is finding XP drivers for all the hardware...if they exist! Since Dell is installing XP on the 1525, I'd say it's safe to assume that the Dell Support site has all the drivers needed to run XP on the 1525....a simple, one-stop for us do-it-yourselfers! :D

Unless someone wants an activation free install, which dell provides on their reinstall discs. That's the only reason I'd opt to get xp/vista from dell.
