wow why get a netbook now? :D I mean if you can deal with these couple of inches you'll get better screen res AND a better GPU.

Though a netbook will probably have superior battery life

Wow that is a smoking hot price. One should really not upgrade it much at that starting config because the upgrade prices are really high. If you want one better try a different starting config, but if you want it cheap go with this.

Agreed. I would suggest upgrading to the Pentium Dual-Core T4200 (2.0Ghz, 800MHz FSB, 1mb L2) for $50, making the total $449. Beyond that, stick with the basics and it's a heckuva deal!

Don't forget the battery. Its kinda sad at its 3 cell state. That will probably only give an hr and a half max battery.

The 4-cell is standard, upgrade to 6-cell is $30....it'd be money well spent, you're right.

Even at $400 that makes this a steal. Undervolt the processor, upgrade the RAM later on. Other than the purse ability, you just can't beat this one.

Even the standard Intel Celeron 560 (2.13GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1mb L2) will outperform any of the Atom processors used in netbooks. This would make a great XP system, if anyone was so inclined. Ubuntu (or any flavor of Linux) would also be a great fit...and free!

They originally advertised this deal with an expiration date of 3/18. But it's still valid as of 3/22!

I suspect this is a clearance sale and the Inspiron 13 is on its way out.....

    Get it while you can!

I highly doubt they are going to get rid of it this quickly. It was only released toward the end of the summer.

I'm betting it will be replaced or revised, even though it hasn't had the lengthy life of some recent Inspiron models (1420 and 1525, in particular). The reason I think that is because it's based on the last-generation Intel GM965 chipset. The 1420 is already on clearance. Once it's gone, that would leave the 13 as the only model based on teh GM965 (and Intel GMA X3100 graphics).

To be competitive, they'll have to make the move to the Intel GM45 chipset with the significantly improved GMA 4500MHD graphics. I really like the Inspiron 13's design and think it would continue to age well for another 6+ months. They could just update the internal hardware without changing the look at all (which they did when the Studio 1535/1735 became the 1537/1737).

I've owned this computer since launch. Try as I might, I can't find a flaw.

This is one helluva deal for a great computer. Really, you don't see 13 inchers go this low.

    hey mick4394,

i noticed you had very enlightening things to say about the dell inspiron 13 and was wondering if you could answer some questions i had? i'm in the market to buy one from dell.com and was debating whether to get the 9 cell battery or the 6 cell. i saw the pics you posted about the battery size (9 cell compared to 6 cell). i'm a student and have very long days where i'm on campus and need at least 4 hrs of battery life for my laptop, so how does the battery life of the 6 cell compare to the 9 cell? i saw how bulky it is so would you say it's a good tradeoff to have a bulky battery for an extra 2 hours? i usually keep my screen at 60% illumination throughout the day and have my charger with me all the time and take good care of my laptop batteries (i don't keep it charged all day all night). and please feel free to let me know any other information i may need to know about this laptop...i'm completely incompetent when it comes to electronics, lol.

    thanks!

That's what I'm hoping for too, and why I'll most likely be holding off on buying it now despite the price. I'll be needing the next laptop I buy to last at least the next 4 years, so I'd prefer to get something with updated specs. Plus, I'd love it if they offered a new 13" model in something other than that bland blue color. Traditionally, when has Dell usually released new models/refreshes? because I need a new laptop by July.

For me, the 9 cell is just too large to be useful. It really kills the portability of this computer. So, I wouldn't say it's not a good trade off... not for me anyway.

As far as the six cell getting four hours, it'll all depend on what you're doing in that four hours. If you're mostly going to be typing notes in a word processor, with wifi turned off, you could probably swing it. If you're plan on using wifi for four hours, you'll be pretty disappointed with the battery life.

You're a student. So there's a good chance that you're on foot a lot. That nine cell is huge and adds a lot of weight to the computer. If it was me, I'd get the six cell, but you know that already.
