    Saw this on SlickDeals...

Dell SB has Latitude D420 ultraportable laptop with 3-year warranty on clearance for $599 with free shipping. Thanks brisar

    Specs:

    Intel Core Solo U1400 (1.20GHz, 533Mhz)
Genuine Windows XP Professional, SP2, with media
    1.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, (512MB Integrated) 2 DIMMs
    60GB Hard Drive, 8MM, 4200RPM
    D-Bay w/ 24X CDRW/DVD w/ Cyberlink PowerDVD
Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card
6 Cell Primary Battery [up to 4.6 hours battery life]
12.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCD Panel

    Good upgrades to consider:

3 Year Limited Warranty plus 1 Year NBD On-Site Service [add $1]

Seems to be a good deal for someone looking for un ultra portable. It doesn't cost much more than an upgraded EEE PC, and is a fair amount more powerful.

    So tempting...
and I don't even need one. Hanging out here is a bad thing. I'm becoming a spendthrift.

I wonder how hard it is to upgrade the RAM.

    EDIT: Interesting fact.

According to the Dell Manual I accessed, there's only 1 Dimm slot.

Yet on the Dell website configuration, there is an option for 1.5GB of RAM. Any idea about that?

The D430 has a 1GB stick soldered on the motherboard. This notebook will have a slot empty when you get it.

I guess the D420 and D430 are the same in having soldered RAM? No point in buying a Dell upgrade in that case then, correct?

Btw, what is the difference between your D420 and the D430?

Aside from the obvious fact that the D430's newer?

The D420 has 512MB of soldered RAM, the D430 has 1GB. Max RAM for D420 was 1.5GB, but 2.0GB for the D430. Other than that, the D430 has the Core 2 lineup of processors...but that's it.

That's odd.. I wonder how Dell is offering 2 GB on the D420 in that case.

It does say 2 Dimms in the upgrade options, but the manual only mentions 1 free RAM slot. Odd. Oh, and thanks Greg!

I'm pretty sure the D420 thing is a typo, because (1) Dell stopped selling new D420's a long time ago and (2) the D420 never came with the U1400 or U7600. Not to mention the D420 can only get up to 1.5GB RAM, and Dell clearly gives a 2.0GB option here.

NBR has two reviews of this notebook, my D430 review and another D420 review as well.
