---DEAL ENDED. PRICE IS $114.99 as of June 5, 2009---
Yesterday, the price was $145.99 for one harddrive on the Dell website. Keep in mind, according to the dell sales people on the phone, these are backordered/out of stock so it won't arrive until June (my order of 2 says it won't ship till 6/19/2009)![]()
Here's the link to the hard drive: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=341-8658
Here's the details for the Free Shipping although it doesn't make much sense to me: http://ecomm.dell.com/dellstore/Pop...=SNA&s=bsd&l=en&cs=04&c=us&campitem_id=117112

-
*sigh* -
-
In for 2!! Thanks for the heads up! I didn't see this on slick deals and those people will suck their inventory dry. Hopefully no one alerts them.
-
-
Will anyone buy for resale? I'm very interested in one but can't take advantage of the offer since I'm in Puerto Rico.
-
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
Sweet, I ordered two. It should make a nice upgrade to my current 60GB 5400 rpm drive that dual boots
Thanks alitunay and nerdn00b -
Thank you, in for two, and it shows as already shipped with a FedEx tracking number.
I ordered today as well. Not bad for Sunday service... -
Wow, mine showing shipped also.
-
just be aware that these are not covered by Seagate's 3-year warranty.
fyi. -
-
These are sold directly as accessories from the Dell link provided.
These are NOT Dell Repair Service parts...
Therefore they are sold with the full Seagate warranty.
Not like them HP drives awhile back, those had been service parts.
USA > Small & Medium Business > Accessories > External Hard Drives, Data Storage & Backup > Internal Hard Drives > SATA 2.5 -
This deal has now made the front page of slick deals. Expect their inventory to go *poof*.
-
-
No, they will have the full 3-year
-
Aren't they considered OEM and not retail?
-
OEM comes in TWO forms.
OEM as sold by NewEgg and many other online & retail resellers would be BULK packed products without retail packaging and no extras, just the drive within a anti-static bag in this case.
Then you have OEM component parts, those are sold to builders / system integrators to be installed within the hardware they sell, those would carry the warranty of that given hardware that Dell installed them into prior to the purchase, or if considered a Repair Replacement part.
These are being sold from the Dell normal consumer accessories page. -

Aye, excellent deal. Absolute overkill storage wise for me, but I couldn't resist ordering one for my pet project.
-
I may need to eat some warranty crow.
I just received my email that my order shipped, even though i read it online a some time ago.
Now they "DELL" has changed the description of the part on the final email.
500GB Hard Drive 9.5MM 7200RPMfor Mobile Precision MX400 Customer Install
The original description said:
500 GB 7200 RPM Momentus 7200.4 Serial ATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor
Dell is playing games, they just turned the order into a replacement part the way it looks. -
So back to 1 year? It's cheap enough that as long as it's not DOA I'm happy.
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Yeah, I assumed it was a 1yr warranty. A 3yr would be icing on the cake.
$102.71 shipped is a great price on this drive. -
Man with that 10% off coupan its coming out to be around $92 including shipping. the best part:
I ordered today and initialy it showed 23rd June as delivery date but later I got a confirmation it as shipped and I will get it by 3rd June. What else you can ask for -
My last order was $173.38 shipped for 2 of them with my 15% coupon. I bought the same drive right when it came out and paid $140 for 1.
-
long answer: because I bought a pair of these in March, then cancelled after having a long discussion with both Seagate and with Dell.
These are DELL Momentus 500GB 7200rpm HDDs. They have DELL firmware on them and a DELL sticker on them (rather than a Seagate sticker). These are covered by Dell's 1-year warranty and are considered OEM products.
Seagate essentially gives Dell all responsibility for these drives.
considering the track record of 7200.4's, I decided against this because they seemed to have problems. Dunno what the track record on the Dell-rebranded Momentus drives is.
search my posts in the official 7200.4 thread for more details on my calls. no need to take my word for it, though. call Seagate or Dell yourself and verify if you're not confident in my comments for whatever reason. I promise my feelings won't be hurt.
If you want a SEAGATE branded hard drive covered by Seagate's 3-year warranty, you'll have to look elsewhere. Dell sells the Seagate-brand drives, as does Newegg and others. -
^^^ correct i went through the same thing with these last time as well
-
I understood everything up until this last sentence. Newegg has their own firmware? I tried searching your posts but NBR said searching is disabled. You said these disks have Dell firmware, not that it matters but are end users allowed to flash these drives? I've seen a couple posts around with people hoping to have the latest firmware and I keep thinking why? Do they not make updated firmware available to everyone? -
i dont believe the firmware is specific to dell but they were labelled with dell stickers. and i called seagate to confirm and gave the serial last time and they said it was only 1 year. the firmware part i can not confirm. but i know i still have the ones i got and both ended up dying on me and i had to have them replaced so i know FOR SURE what seagate told me when i called to get the rms number
-
apologies.
Dell sells the real "Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB" HDD...AND their own "Dell Momentus". as does Newegg and others.
Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374
Dell: my old link now says "product not currently available", which makes sense, because they keep pushing back people's orders. I re-ordered this model back in March and have yet to receive them
Others: http://www.google.com/products?q=se...a=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title
so yea, as far as I know, only Dell computer/parts reseller that sells their own version of Momentus (Dell Momentus 7200.4) and the regular version of the Momentus (Seagate Momentus 7200.4). everyone else just sells the regular version.
hope that's more clear.
and zfactor, Seagate told me those drives have Dell custom firmware on them. Dunno for sure if they actually wrote their own firmware or if Seagate just says that to further make the point that they don't provide warranty support...but that's what they told me. Nice guy, as I recall. He recommended I get a regular drive...so here I am. still waiting. lol. -
I bought mine pretty much the day it came out and have no issues currently but it's not in a gaming system. So if there are some underlying issues I'm not seeing it.
-
well that's good and that's what we all hope for, long term, Mandrake. Lots of people speculate that the reason these drives have been impossible to find over the last few months is because there were problems with either the build, design or firmware. some people in the official 7200.4 thread reported problems. the latest trickle of drives have come with a new firmware previously not available that older drives cannot "upgrade" to.
we'll hope you got a good one, as well as everyone else in the thread that jumped on one of these. I just wanted to make sure people weren't buying these under any false pretenses or illusions about what they're getting. I did, back in March. these Dells may have better firmware for all I know. Maybe worse. But people should know what to expect and look for, you know? -
Now that I read people have been having issues watch mine crash and burn.
-
nah, I hope not. nothing worse than a HDD failing.
-
I will be on the phone first thing tomorrow AM and ask Dell why the games with completely changing the item description only when indicated shipped.
When order was placed the page said:
500 GB 7200 RPM Momentus 7200.4 Serial ATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor
As well with the next two Dell emails.
#1 Dell Order Has Been Acknowledged
#2 Dell Order Has Been Confirmed
Then with the #3 email, Dell Order Has Shipped, they decided to change the item description to nothing that resembles the original item ordered, unless you consider 500 GB & 7200 RPM as close enough.
Then they added in "for Mobile Precision MX400 Customer Install"
No mention of Momentus 7200.4 or even the Free Fall Sensor in the item description as ordered.
This fact alone don't play well with me.
i will likely refuse the shipment at the door and just let Dell eat the lost shipping cost
Good drive or not, Big business needs to stop all the games -
