Dell says the video card is not compatible with XP. Is that bs? If not, do i need a vid card if I'm not a gamer? I'll probably store and view some video clips from my camera and watch dvds so will the integrated graphic option be ok?

Not having DVI doesn't really concern me. Seems like a good deal here is what I have put together with a 17" and the $500 off.

    PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB) edit
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium edit

$1277 - $500 = $777 + Tax = $829.44 (plus more memory from NewEgg) much cheaper then what Dell offers. and a hard drive upgrade to 7200rpm when one goes on sale.

I hope there's no problem not being a Business customer, although I put a company name in my order, as it was a required field.

Don't know how others have got a better CPU at the same price, but anyway, here's my configuration:

I've never heard that the card doesn't work with XP before, and I'm almost sure I've seen people here on the forum that have a 1500 with the 8600m and XP. But if you don't game then a integrated card should be fine.

I was trying to config a 1700. The vostro 1500 config doesn't have a problem with the graphics card and XP. But I like the 17' screen and full keyboard (ie. number keys).

Windows XP is something Dell had not previously offered on the Vostro 1700. In addition to the "compatibility alert" for the graphics cards, I also notice that for the 1700 there's no Bluetooth option for XP.

I'm sorry for being newb but...
My understanding is that RAM for the Vostro can be easily replaced near the battery, but for Hard Drive and Processor you can update those too?

The 'compatibility alert' for the graphics card is poo. I had my 8600m gt running in XP along with an army of others just fine.

I think that the compatibility gibberish may spawn from the 8600 being a DX10 compatible card? I'm pretty sure it is DX10 compatible (which DX10 is only available in Vista), but I'm not super savvy on all the techie specs.

    Hi,

I am getting confused with the Dell deals. I went to their website and I don't see a mention of a coupon. I also don't see the XP available on a Vostro as the OP mentions. Can anyone help me out? Is this a current deal? Can I get a Vostro with XP? Is there a compatibility issue with the graphic card and XP?

    Thanks
    adam

    See this link: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=752462

They don't mention the coupon on their site. Just to to Dell Small Business and select the base Vostro model of your choice. Build up from there to meet the minimum $999 or $1249, then once in your cart you can apply the coupon.

Yes, XP is available with the Vostro models. For example, I ordered a 1400 with XP. Added lots of goodies and it came to $777, which is a great deal.

Haha, same here man. :) It's a great deal, but I gotta fight off the temptation because I'm waiting for the Montevina too.

I'm not sure if I should wait though, I know this type of deal will eventually come for the Montevina but do they come anytime around it's launch, in the middle, or do these deals only come near the end of the platform?

Dang man, now looking at it in retrospective...I wish I jumped on this deal it really was a good deal.

Damnit lol, oh well hopefully there's another good deal like this again, because the other deals like $200 off the XPS aren't that great.

You said Dell rarely offers Vostros at discount prices? Ahhh...oh well I hope I catch the next bargain next time. :)

Yeah one my dad's friends has a 1500 and my dad said it was kind of bulky, i don't really mind however.

I mean if a thicker notebook means it's gonna be alot cheaper than a thinner one with the same components i'm still going for the thick one. as long as it isn't like a brief case size i'm alright haha

i always wonder why the XPS is alot more expensive even with the same components though, is it much thinner or something?

Thanks for telling me though. :)

Also I'm not sure about Processors, do the Dell Laptops have the 45nm "Penryn" processors in them yet?

Which numbers up are going to be considered Penryn?

Edit: Ah nevermind these weren't Penryn then, if the information I read was correct than the processors' model numbers have to begin with 8 or 9.

Okay I guess I don't feel so bad for missing this deal then. :D

But then this made me realized, if not that many Penryn processors have been put into notebooks yet, how long will it take for Montevina to actually come?

What's the difference between the "Santa Rosa Refresh" and "Montevina" I know Montevina is a different platform but how much different will it be? I'm going crazy dunno which one to wait for O_O

When was the last time Dell offered this discount for the Vostro by the way?
