I received an email from GamersGate today and they are starting up a new service. For those who have never heard of GamersGate, it's a website run by IGN.com and they just started a NEW service called VOID.
It's a way to play FREE as in free games. Consider it a game lending library which they supposedly are adding new games every 2 weeks. So what's the catch? You have to watch a 60 sec video/commercial which supports the devs.![]()
VOID works by giving you "Game Slots" to your account. They give you a list of games you can download. You pick the game and install it. Then after 2 weeks IIRC you can remove that game and replace it with another game.
I saw you can buy additional game slots but one slot might be enough for most.
You will need to create a new account and activate VOID.

There's another catch - the vast majority of the games on offer are 3rd-rate at best. The only decent ones they have you can often buy for $10 or less.
They better have some at least AA titles to fill up the service, and fast. -
There's really no catch cause free is free. Some of those games are actually very good. If someone already owns those games then there's little reason to use the service. But they have said they will continue to add games to the service.

Maybe I'll just camp out until they offer BF3 and SC2

Hopefully there is some interesting stuff available. -

Again it's FREE, there is no dollar investment to play. I have never finished a game in two weeks time so there is no need for me to pay to change a game.
Big whoop-dee-do that you have to sit thru a 60 sec video. I don't have a problem with that either. -

I like to think that things which are free should at least be available without imposing any burden on you (as a critical component of what 'free' is). I suppose this depends on your definition of 'free' - but if it was just 'free' before, I don't see how it's ' FREE' after giving consideration to the fact that it's ad supported.
I also think that ad-supported gaming is a really good idea. -
Someone has to pay and I don't have a problem sitting thru a video, it's still free. What isn't free are 'freemium' games where the hook is free but in order to continue you have to pay. That's not free.
I have no problem with ads and this idea is not new. This goes back to the late 90's with NetZero and other free Internet dial-up services. -
Rome universalis is a must for die hard strategy fans - I can't believe there is even a discussion going on if the free is worth it - if you don't want it, nobody is imposing on you.
-
In the end, if it doesn't require me to input a CC# and send payment, it's free. If watching ads = payment, I'd be broke and in $50,000 debt from a days worth of Youtube.

i have to agree why complain when your getting something free....if your time is worth more then the 60s then you should buy the game...not everyone has spare cash. If your a high school kid or in college and broke this is great...you got a real job then move on but dont complain because its not what you want.

ummm are the games only limited time use?

Let me quote myself from this thread to make my stance clear on whether this is worth it:

Your argument adds nothing to this thread. Why even post in it? Apparently your "time" isn't as precious as you pretend.
