Fileplanet has this seminal RTS game for free. You don't even have to login or create an account to download it. Terrific game for those wanting to experience one of Westwood Studios best RTS games.

Who didn't? :D Felt great rescuing her in that level in the Allied campaign.

The original Red Alert was a great game, still very much playable today. Those were the days...

Likewise, but the Air Force General is where it's at! Sometimes, China Tank General as well.

You should look into downloading the Shockwave mod for ZH and play using that. So much fun!

    I LOVE Generals/ZH

Not the best balanced game of all time, but the most important part is that it is FUN to the bitter end. The super units like Col Burton are awesome. Used properly you can effectively maim an opponent quickly even if they are all but demolishing your main base. And particle cannon FTW! But I hate fighting GLA. They're like the Zerg in SC. Difficult to learn, but an effective player can make short work of the enemy.

Can't wait for Generals 2. Better capture the feeling of the original.

Holy crap I'd faint if this was made.

Anyway, as far as gameplay goes, I tend to first turtle defense my base, build some Comanches (3-5) for mobile defense/scouting, an airbase or two of Nighthawks for anti-AA, 1-2 bases of B1B Lancers (Shockwave mod) for massive damage and sometimes CAS (they drop cluster bombs), and maybe some Raptors and/or Combat Chinooks (w/ 4 Rockets and 2 Snipers each) for general combat. No ground units whatsoever other than 'dozers, and the enemy can never penetrate my defenses!

    :D

I don't use Auroras out of principle.

GLA is great if you want to quickly set up little firebases around the map (Tunnel Networks), but their base defenses are pure ****. Always difficult trying to protect yourself with GLA, unless you're the Stealth General or something.

Generals/ZH was one of my favourite games to play too. Air force general was the best~ The good ole days of rockvee rushing... or sneaking stealth Comanches with rocket upgrades into an enemies base from the back o_O I miss those days.. now I just work, eat and sleep.. sigh.. Thanks for the tb free dl!

Are the EA servers for Generals (or ZH) still up? Every time I tried playing on them within the last few years, they were so unreliable that holding a connection for more than two minutes would be a miracle, let alone actually getting one. Has EA allowed end-users to host private servers?

I always ended up playing with Hamachi as a LAN game over the net with friends. The online service was always quirky.

Yeah, I use Himachi. Been working flawlessly.

The generals servers always give me a sync error after a few minutes so I dropped using them completely.

Red Alert 2 was one of my favorite games of all time. I think its the most balanced RTS game I've ever seen.

All these other games are all well and good, but the Red Alert giant ant missions will always have a place in my heart.
