lol I just got one, always kinda wanted a domain maybe I can do something productive with it.
I am just weary of auto renewing service or something shady like that.
ViciousComputers.com is now Mine !
Here is what I have to say about my new domain. -
Auto-renewal is actually a great feature to keep on. Once your website is popular on search engines it's a valuable commodity for vultures to grab from beneath you if you forget to renew. It's easy to forget to renew when a year or longer passes without your thinking of it.
If you do want to turn it off, GoDaddy does have a setting for that when you log into their site. In my experience they haven't done anything shady.
Maybe it's time for me to buy a new domain. I rarely end up using them, but I enjoy buying them, none the less.

yeah gotta figure out how to use it, its not like what I have done in the past where I just have FTP space and can make my own web page, doesnt even include email for free, have to pay a monthly fee. However google sites gives you free email I think and you just have to have a domain name to use it.
One of the reasons I wanted a domain, as I work on our company google sites pages all the time, I have put together a lot of our wiki and documents.
If I get serious with my site I'll keep auto renew on, but for now I just wanted to toy around with it. I hate charges just showing up out of the blue with auto payment.
edit: take back what I said, you get 1 free email with 1000mb space. -
At some point you could look into alternate web hosts. Some offer better features than others (including an email system already setup). Although, GoDaddy is pretty inexpensive and may meet your needs for the most part.
If you signed up for hosting with GoDaddy, they probably will set up all the nameserver stuff for you in the next few days. They should email you the information (or you can find it on their site after loging in) providing you the information to login with FTP. -

You get one free service:
website tonight, hosting, or something else.
I picked hosting without knowing you get just one, now having trouble finding out how to just "make a page"
I get space & bandwidth with the hosting though, dont see why I wont be able to make my own .html files and upload them to my hosting area.
website tonight seems like an automated streamline website setup thing for people that cant write there own code.
Im sure I will have tons of questions later, but for now I'll try to figure out as much on my own as possible to save everybody time.
Thanks Cin for another great deal, this one is sure to kill a lot of time -
Don't worry, you can. Hosting was the best option to pick. Upload the site with the file name index.html and you should be golden. It may not show up for a few days initially, since the nameservers were probably recently updated. Once the nameservers are done doing their magic the site you upload should be displayed instantly.
Good luck and congrats on your purchase. -

got a index.html file uploaded my url was working earlier with the template page they gave me while seting up, but after I choose to host I think it tossed that out the window.
My hosting status says 'setup' meaning done but yet I get an error with my url. But it says something about how it may take 24 to 48 hours for everything to settle and work.
You can find the url in a whois search though.
Ironic I think I did not need the domain at all. When we created our company wiki its tied into our company domain with google sites.
I went to go make my own google site at my bosses recomendation and in the registration process it asked me for my domain name. I didnt have one so I could not create a free google site.
Well I went to go get one now that I have a domain, and it didnt ask for it!
Looks like google is now giving away free websites to anybody!
So if $2.00 was not cheap enough for you how about free, and instead of 1 year I think this is basically forever.
We run our entire company through google sites, its fast, lots of space, and neat gadgets, and very user friendly.
http://sites.google.com/
This is just my landing page for google sites - http://sites.google.com/site/viciouscomputers/
I'll figure out how to edit the url later. Now I have to decide to go with the traditonal DIY website via my godaddy domain or stick with what I know using google sites.
I'll probably make one my professional site for computer reviews and other stuff like that, and the other will be the family site for pictures and things. Also maybe toss google ad's in there and make a little $$$ -
In the mean time you could redirect your domain to the Google site. That will give you the convenience of using what you know, while also having the pleasure of a short domain name. Until you build a new site, if you chose to do so.

Just gotta figure out how
I'll read into it later, being that I am at work I think I wasted too much time already tonight. -
Yeah, get back to work!
Or if you don't feel like working yet, here's how:
Text instructions from GoDaddy
A video tutorial with an annoying ad at the begining <--Use your Google address in place of the "affiliate" junk they discuss. -
So I purchased a domain for me and my friends. Its for our music/gaming group teamcoolbreeze or TCB. teamcoolbreeze.com
I'd better brush up on html haha.
Also I stumbled upon this awesome giveaway for a free "WebSite X5 Smart 7".
It ends today, so if you want to get it... you've only got a few hours.
I'll tryout google sites as well
Thanks Cin'!! Another $2.50 down the drain. An interesting semi-birthday present for my friend. -

Im going to stick with using the godaddy domain to point to my google site I think, as my test home page is up with godaddy now I can see they still insert that huge banner "this page is hosted for free blah blah blah godaddy.com!!!"
If its really cheap to remove it I'll stick with it, otherwise google is better.
You will like google sites d.rivera its so easy to use and very functional. You can insert things instantly via a built in editor, search the site easy, and do manual html editing if you want. -

Most full blown html may not work well in google sites, it blocks certian code so you may have to deal with the godaddy banner if you use there free hosting or pay what it takes for a none free package.
While we are on the topic, what do you guys thing is the best website creator out there? Doesnt have to be free just functional, robust, yet easy to use.
Also what the heck is wordpress? In the photoshop forums I see these awesome wordpress themes all the time that you can make in photoshop, I am guessing that is also some kind of .html site generator? -
I gave Website X5 a try and made this site http://teamcoolbreeze.com in about an hour, tinkering with random things. I've made my first website lol, with quite a bit of help of course.
Simple, yes, but it gets the job done. Great for personal use! I'll prob work on creating a website template in Photoshop soon.

so far I managed to use it to make a simple page and replaced my test page
- ViciousComputers.com
and I found how to get a free access to google.apps instead of google.sites. Its the same but for business so it does a lot more.
It syncs into your domain, so now I have access to like 50 free gmail accounts to use on my domain instead of the single godaddy one, and I can take people to my google sites with my domain name.
I just added a new CNAME
so you would go here: start.viciouscomputers.com
at one programs export to ftp does not work for me even though I know I had the right settings. I had to use the export to cd function and just save to a folder and then upload it myself. Thats fine though I can tune up the pictures and stuff in photoshop that way.
ugh I dont like that free web page program at all, cant add html to a text area, when you do html it has no help at all its manual code, and its all centered and in an aplet. I just created my reviews page took me forever and had to manually copy it to a new page, but I lost my copy on my clipboard and the file was just saved not exported so when I changed my project I lost it.
im going to try out some other editors. -

How much is the yearly renewal cost?

Im working on getting wordpress installed right now but its proving to be a pain. I have no idea what I am doing with all this MySql server business, and my ftp.
Oh well, good times good times. -

Im so happy with my page now
I probably could have made a good webpage on my own given time and dedication but I managed to find a way to make wordpress work well for me.
I wont have just a page for my reviews and things, but you can search posts via catagory's and I can create custom pages. I like my nice dark theme too.
Site is in the sig now.
I'll end up making my start.viciouscomputers.com my professional site that I will try my money making ideas on, things like photography services or computer services. -
