Just for those interested, the FX1600M is the workstation equivalent of the 8700M GT.

Yes. The HP business models' 3 year warranty offers international coverage.

I wish this was the FX3600M model.

This is painful to watch. 2/3 off the price within 12 months.

WOW! What a deal. HP Business class, good warranty, 17" screen and WUXGA. Very nice. If I needed a laptop I would jump on this.

Han - I agree with you, I don't like netbooks either. Why all the love for them all of a sudden?

This is a VERY good computer, especially at this price. Deals like this don't show up often, even on such an active forum as this one.

About Netbooks: As a budget computer user, I had always envied those who could afford pricey business ultraportables while I dealt with 7 lb. monsters on a daily basis that suffered from motherboard warping and screen deformations. If you instead view netbooks as the business ultraportables of 4 years ago, but made cheaper and even lighter while retaining the same specs, you'll understand why they're rather capable machines that deserve a place.

I ordered on Wed night and received my 8710w today. TD has trully stepped it up from their dark days as far as customer service goes. I'm happy with the laptop. Already wiped it and installed a clean copy of Vista.

Seems decent. There is a little bit of light leakage from the bottom but nothing major. Seems pretty common with laptops. Other than that the screen colors and brightness are pretty uniformed. What's the utility to identify the display model/maker?

Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Monitors -> Generic PnP Monitor -> Details tab -> Select Hardware IDs (should be the second option)

Mine reads LGD3A01. LG is one of the good panels, correct?

Not always. Like all brands, LG has good and bad panels. Zfactor would know better about LCD panels.

If it helps, the notebookcheck review has the luminance of the screen at 150 nits average. That said, the contrast ratio is very good at 600:0, so it's usable as long as you don't need maximum brightness.

I had the Samsung screen when I first got mine. Then I contacted HP to have the screen changed, and now mine is a AUO.
Difference? The Samsung one has more light leak, but overall really bright. The AUO is almost no light leak and the whole screen is lit evenly. Colors and contrasts are excellent on both screens.

the lg you have is the equivelent of the lp171wu1 a4 model. overall a very nice looking screen but the a4 model is a bit dimmer than some of the other lg's..

lg is one of the best you can get. imo better than the auo and way better than the samsung. the only drawback with some of the 17" lg's is they have a bit un- uniform backlighting not talking about light bleed but some have oddities in the backlighting, but they can only be seen where the screen is totally black with no colors. if i had a choice though in 17" screens lg would still be my first choice of the mainstream models

if this had a 8800 gpu or similar id have had one on my desk already these are awesome systems and very well built. i cant get by with the 8700 though

Depends, I have seen some really nice Samsung screens that beat many LGs. I have not, however, seen enough AUOs to make a judgment, but I can tell you my AUO is excellent.

I would think that the Dell m1730s with dual Nvidia 9800m SLI @ $1000 would give this deal a good fight. Still an amazing price for a staggeringly powerful machine. :)

Ah, I must have missed that, not into gaming machines, but yes that was a a sweet deal, can you point me to the deals thread ? :D When was this ?

But I'm guessing it did not have a three year warranty (and adding that would have pushed it to $1200+taxes = ~ $1300 or so ?)

I can see your point but. I can see netbooks as being useful for people who travel A LOT and are in airports and planes constantly, but for others I think you can get a lot more with a light 14" machines.

Sale isn't done. (I'm not sure if referring to another forum is allowed) but if you head over to slickdeals.net forums, you'd find that there was a HUGE SNAFU with these laptops. I ordered one, and like 90% of the people received a refurbed 8710w laptop with a T7800 processor instead of a T9500 processor. On the upside it came with the 135w power supply, so upgrading to a fx3600 won't be a problem. On the downside, my Li-On battery already has a year on it, and my processor is from 2 generations ago(same clock speed, -2 megs of L2 cache). Now I'm debating on whether I return this and plop $600 more for an 8730w with a blu-ray drive and an fx2700 card.
Hot damn do I love the clean look of this notebook though.

So tiger direct is not willing to give you a new 8710w for the same price with the specs they stated?

We're all still waiting on a resolution on what HP will do. So far, they're unwilling to admit their mistakes and instead opted to give everyone $30 credit and a full refund of the product. I don't know about them, but I priced a T9500 processor, and the cheapest I found it for was $250.

Tiger Direct is now selling these exact same units again after pulling it from the website with the same model # and changed their description to a T7800. This is some serious shady business. I'm unwilling to pay this much for a refurbished product labeled as new.
